These threads started when I proposed we should deliberately choose a President outside Kikuyu and Kalenjin tribes. A Raila hater told me I was indirectly campaigning for Raila. This motivated the second series on Railaphobia.
The responses have again led me to two more questions: How should Raila relate with Mt Kenya voters? What is it about Raila and BBI? I address the first question here.
Newspaper headlines last week depicted Raila as desperately trying to win Mt Kenya. It hurt me knowing Raila's past service to Kikuyu nation. After 2017 elections, I wrote in @TheStarKenya and commented that Raila was reliving Kibaki experience in 1997. What experience was that?
After Kibaki was rigged out, his court case was delayed over one year and finally dismissed on a technicality. Sunday Nation writer Kwendo Opanga commented: “Kibaki may be the best president, KENYA WILL NEVER HAVE.” Nobody thought Kibaki would live to be president in 2002
In 2017, I saw the same happening to Raila. In my star article, I said it was my political obituary to my hero; thinking that was Raila’s last chance in politics. Apparently, I was wrong. All indications are that Raila will be on the ballot – AS A SERIOUS CANDIDATE
While my personal wish would have been for Raila to retire from politics, I cannot begrudge his pitch one more time given the injustices he has endured in elections. Sonko nearly let the cat out of the bag – RAILA’S DEFEATS HAVE NOT BEEN AUTHENTIC
How would I handle Mt Kenya voting block in Raila’s shoes? We are told many times in marketing that it’s better to specialize in your customers. That there are better returns in pleasing your customers than trying to win new ones. It can’t be so different in politics
“Pleasing the UNPLEASABLE can be a trap, an endless treadmill of disappointment that leads nowhere in particular.
We should be clear because WORKING TO PLEASE THE PLEASABLE is a lot more likely to pay off.”
In other words, it makes more sense to love your supporters and engage them than to invest in winning hostile or lukewarm supporters. The utterance by Kikuyu leaders, especially Nderitu Gachagua and Ndindi Nyoro makes Raila entreaty very expensive
Something else, Raila’s focus on Mt Kenya votes may be at the expense of his conventional support base. We are told many times marriage becomes boring because we stop “seducing” our spouses and take them for granted. I would tell Raila – please the pleasable more
Numbers make a politician and Raila has a right to hunger for more and more support. But he should not be reduced to a beggar. Of course, people have the right to choose or reject him. But it should not be a privilege to seek votes in Kikuyuland for Raila. He shouldn't stoop low
But the more he appears desperate and beggarly, the more his Kikuyu haters will “play hard to get” with ethnic arrogance and entitlement. Mutahi Ngunyi could be right - Kikuyus sometimes exaggerate their sense of importance. How did we become IDPs in Kenya if we are so sharp?
Raila should relate with Kikuyu in a spirit of mutual respect and inter-dependence. Not as a junior. I repeat – Kikuyu leaders tried to remove Moi in vain. It is Raila and his father who made it impossible for Moi to rule Kenya for life as he anticipated.
Politics is about votes of course. But in 2017, Raila demonstrated that Mt Kenya votes are not a SINE QUA NON FOR VICTORY. The repeat elections also shattered the myth of TYRANNY OF NUMBERS. Not to mention that Raila still has many supporters within Mt Kenya.
In our collective hypocrisy, stigmatize political demonstrations and opposition politics. Then blame Raila for betraying the opposition. Third thread on what we miss in Luo Presidency. LONG THREAD, YOU CAN DISCARD
This is funny. Kikuyus are especially good at extolling the excellence of the Luo workers outside the political context. “My Luo mechanic, carpenter, doctor......” But they immediately coil back at the thought of a Luo president
When Supreme Court annulled 2017 elections, I stopped for lunch on Kiambu rd. Watching TV updates on celebratory demonstrations across Kenya, a lady patron tried to convince me by pointing at TV “tarora imundu ici waana”
“Egomania pushes us to ignore useful feedback, to bristle at the input, and to refuse to do the work to get better at our craft. It’s actually a sign of fear and weakness.”
It follows that this collective fear of the Luo ego is actually our egomania. We don’t want competition and when we are challenged, we look for silly excuses to bring them down. Have noted many times on social media when a Kikuyu is challenged by a Luo he refers to FORESKIN
Even politically, it is quite evident that the Luo elite has largely escaped corruption accusations. It seems we never get through the fact that Jaramogi was content with ideological principles and democratic struggle than amassing wealth.
What is this madness that we cannot be led by a Luo, when the community has excelled in all spheres of life, nationally and internationally? Second thread on what we miss in a Luo Presidency. LONH THREAD, FREE TO DISCARD
A Luo Presidency will release a lot of professional pride and also arrogance and principles. These are all positive values that we need to develop. Our country is poor because of being so pedestrian and having leadership that cannot inspire people to dream and achieve big.
The Luo do this because of pride and vast talents. How often do Kenyans wish our leaders have values? Yet, Jaramogi set precedent by resigning from VP position and telling Kenyatta: “I have a strong conscience which pinches me when am earning public money without a job to do.”
What has Kenya missed by not having a Luo President? A lot, as I discuss in a 5-part thread. LONG THREAD, FREE TO DISCARD
Everywhere in the world, people take pride in the success of a family or village member. It is not only natural but even healthy. Hence there is nothing wrong with a community wishing one of them is the President
Even ruling out power abuse and corruption on behalf of the tribe, the mere association with power and publicity is enough cause for pride and motivation. And it's deeply rooted in our instincts. Women admire tall men because evolutionarily, it signified domination
You can only make laws objectively for a nation if you have no immediate interest in power. Eleventh thread on Railaphobia. My views on BBI continue... NOT VERY LONG
One very dangerous proposal is the creation of an imperial Presidency. Very strange being associated with Raila, who has suffered so much under rogue leadership, you would imagine be the fiercest warrior against such recklessness
History has a better illustration of the pitfalls of changing a constitution to fix a short term problem. In a previous thread, we mentioned how Kenya became a one-party state. To bar Jaramogi Odinga and George Anyona from registering a party to compete with Kanu
Raila is a great Kenyan but also amenable to HUMAN AND POLITICAL MISTAKES. He should be criticized and faulted. My tenth thread on Railaphobia, talking about BBI. LONG THREAD
I did my best to explain the context behind Railaphobia in Central Kenya and to defend Raila against misplaced and hate-inspired prejudices. This does not mean I exonerate him from errors of omission and commission.
This is about BBI. I have won some admiration from Raila supporters, and they will no doubt hate the fact that I oppose BBI. Please listen to my argument before unfollowing me. Also, hang on to me, I will explain why I dreamt of Raila Presidency in the next thread.
