At 6:16am, I responded to my first call of the day. A homeless man, w/ an active felony warrant. He went to a church for help & was turned away. He then asked for the police to arrest him. He’s battling an addiction; alcohol & drugs. When asked why jail he said he went to - 1/4
the ARCH & another place w/o any luck. Downtown Austin, “tent city (as he called it) is a MESS. You have ppl who are addicted to meth, kush, cocaine, and alcohol and everyone has their hustle going on, trying to get their next fix.” He said he didn’t have another option, but jail
So here I am... thinking of this too often situation. He’s in jail, getting the help he needs; warm bed, seeing a nurse - getting back on meds, and away from the chaos. I was able to provide the only service able to assist him. Law Enforcement is too often dealt a bad hand, 3/4
not by our choice, but from policy makers.
In conclusion, we need to find a better solution for these situations and for the homeless who either refuse or don’t want help. We owe our community and the people in “the mess” a better alternative & and outcome. 4/4 #fridaymorning
