UPDATE: @Microsoft announces that it "will suspend contributions for the duration of the 2022 election cycle to all members of Congress who voted to object to the certification of electors."
@Microsoft 2. This next part is important. @Microsoft will also "suspend contributions for the same period for state officials and organizations who supported such objections or suggested the election should be overturned."
4. By targeting its suspension to the 147 Republicans who tried to overturn the presidential election AND state-level officials who supported the effort, @Microsoft has established a standard for other companies.
6. The larger point is that the position that @Microsoft used to be -- an indefinite pause on all suspensions -- in untenable. Eventually you have to decide if you will continue to support members of Congress who tried to overturn the election or not.
7. Companies still on an indefinite "pause," without saying their intentions about the 147 members of Congress that voted to overturn the election results, include:
Florida @GovRonDeSantis doesn't want to address his state's 2.7B budget shortfall or raging pandemic so he's introducing legislation to fine social media companies $100,000 a day if they ban politicians who use their platforms to encourage violence
@GovRonDeSantis The premise of DeSantis proposed legislation is that Facebook, Twitter and other social media companies are biased against conservatives
The legislation is pitched as an effort to protect free speech but actually violates the First Amendment. The government can't force companies to print political speech. Forced speech is just as much of a free speech violation of preventing speech.
2. The argument from Trump's lawyers hinges on this language from the Constitution: "[j]udgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor…"
3. Trump's lawyers argue that the key word is AND.
They argue that because the constitution says punishments are limited to removal AND disqualification it means you have to be removed before you can be disqualified
@kroger 2. @Kroger has been enjoying record profits: $2.9 BILLION over the first 3 quarters of 2020. That's $1.2 BILLION IN EXTRA PROFITS compared to the first 3 quarters of 2019.
3. In September, @Kroger announced it would spend $1 billion in stock buybacks. This will increase the stock price in the short term, increasing compensation for corporate executive that are paid in stock grants and options.
@WSJ 2. Republican and Democratic lawmakers tell the WSJ that they will not help corporations water down or kill progressive legislation unless the money starts flowing again!
@WSJ 3. Republican members of Congress are considering banning corporate lobbyists from their offices, presumably unless they start writing checks again
5. @Publix has also donated thousands to state legislators who pushed to overturn the election
Publix donated 10.5K to 10 members of the Georgia legislature who argued millions of votes be thrown away so that Trump could be installed for a 2nd term
