The diamond-shaped piece in the centre has three characters; i cannot quite make them out,especially the middle character. They may be 三天油 "three days oil" but this does not make sense in the context...
Jokes aside, this is actually a rather interesting example of changes in chinese writing direction. Up until the 20th century, Chinese books were written in vertical columns, from right-to-left. Now, most chinese books are written, left-to-right, in rows....
Now, we see this Left-to-right writing direction being also applied to writing in columns as well-- something that was unheard of in the past, save (iirc) in the rare exception of Chinese glosses to Manchurian texts (Manchurian is written Left to right, in columns)
