Well, I owe this to @david_perell and @AliAbdaal and to their workshop video... A thread on some of the wonderful things I got from it:

The concept of Idea Factory is about combining creativity and a systematic approach 1/
David covers a lot of the what and how of his Collect->Connect->Create framework. Ali shares his idea techniques including what he calls birdsong and coal mining 2/
A statement by David that I find intriguing: We have moved from a space-bias towards a time-bias (with respect to our information consumption) 3/
Some of us are tempted to believe that in order to get serious about writing or creating, we have to get away from the noise, turn off all distractions. This waldenponding (HT @vgr @breaking_smart bit.ly/2MJnfRn) idea is an alluring myth 4/
A fav quote for Ali Abdaal: There are no unique messages, only unique messengers.

David: When we write as though we are trying to impress our English teacher, we write fancy words that people don't understand. 5/
Ali: Once we grok steal-like-artist concept, any content we consume becomes potential fodder for our creative output. Then, scrolling through Twitter is not just scrolling through Twitter, it is a source of new ideas to build upon 6/
Apply the label of creator to yourself even before you have created something. It is a profound shift to look at ourselves as creator instead of consumer 7/
One highpoint of the video is a superb live demo of this process. In 10 mins Ali scrolled through his live Twitter timeline and jotted down many different ideas in his Notion database for videos and articles 8/
Interesting hack for improving writing habit by Ali I'd like to try: Copy interesting titles and sub-headings and write down thoughts on it before reading (or don't even read) 9/
Curate your content diet such that the stuff you come across is stuff you can write about.
-Dr. Ali Abdaal 10/
David talked about different cadence for different purposes/projects and people/phases. Not everything is about stealing and remixing and quantity. 11/
What's obvious to you might be amazing to others.
-Derek Sivers

Maybe I am not the best judge of what content is worth making.
-Ali Abdaal

What do we have that the world needs from us?
-David Perell
12/
Good question during Q&A: How do you manage your inner saboteur? Specifically how did you deal with self-doubt and hesitation in the early stages as a creator? 13/15
Ali: Advice of Gary Vaynerchuk to look at my work as documentation rather than creation. That takes a lot of pressure off. To be original and good. Sharing what I liked in a book or how I implemented a technique does not seem intimidating
14/15
The word guru can connote someone who came down from a mountain up there. It is easier to be a guide than a guru. A guide is on the same journey as those whom they guide.

Twelve years of trying to grok #strengths approach and helping others apply it to their #career situations has taught a few things that others seem to miss or be misled by other flavors so here is a thread
I like to call it the Buckingham-Gallup strengths approach as elucidated in two books: Now Discover Your Strengths (NDYS) and Go Put Your Strengths to Work (GPYSTW)
I am not super-impressed by the credentialing around this by Gallup or other variants from Marcus. There are two other flavors that are very different and not as useful for career thinking
