So, one of my product babies was retired this week - the #EchoLook - and I’ve been posting about it on TikTok because that is apparently What I Do Now. Here’s a thread.

Short intro, for those not in the know:
Next on my #EchoLook thread: How I found myself qualified to be the 4th team member and first designer on the project. #Ux #design #career
The first of two posts speculating as an outsider as to why it had to be shut down, not speaking for the company. This one largely speaks to the realities of hardware dependent on a cloud service. Music turned out a little loud, focus on captions.

EPISODE 2: That time Narnia GBA broke the future #gamedev #nintendo

Read about our @NatureEcoEvo comment on how to prepare a growing #postdoc workforce in the @nationalpostdoc #POSTDOCket! The nb of postdocs has doubled in 30 years, but faculty positions nearly not changed. We propose 5 key points to better prepare us for a wide range of careers:
1.Align career development with job markets: a survey found that #STEM PhDs lack skills essential for the current #career landscape. #Postdocs need to be encouraged by advisors & departments to invest time in professional development.
#phdchat #beyondprof…
2. Sustain wellness & work-life balance: a happy worker is a productive worker! No #postdoc should lack access to healthcare, sick leave or parental leave, we need more transparency about benefits & recognition of #mentalhealth consequences of short term contracts & relocation.

In July 1890, Vincent van Gogh painted one of his best-known artworks, Wheatfield with Crows. The #painting is on display in The #VanGogh Museum, Amsterdam, and has long been thought of as his last painting before committing suicide only weeks later.
#GoghPainting #artist 🎨🎭 Van Gogh Last Painting 🎨
Although there are many who have disputed the claim that this painting is the last #artwork ever made by #vincentvangogh , it is certainly possible to understand why the tragic end to van Gogh’s life has been so closely associated with this image.
Many elements of the #painting can be interpreted as indicating the emotional turmoil van #Gogh experienced and as a result, it makes for an interesting example of how an #artwork can be reflective of the #mentalstate of an #artist.

Thread about working on a single product for too long :

1. You get to know the product in and out totally. you will know what features are on the roadmap, what can be improved, what will work for the future, what wont, etc.
But, any random person outside of the product circle will 'definitely' have an out of the box idea that you've never thought of. keep your ears open.

2. you know all the design styles, you maintain a perfect style guide, you stick to the rules for all new features.
But, rules are meant to be broken. Make sure your design system evolves with the product. Any design system for sure will get outdated over a period. Keep updating it.

3. Every design you do, will 'suit/fit' the existing layouts and screen. Nothing looks new.

#Story of my journey from #Housewife to #SareeDraper
I started my career as a fashion stylist for ad-shoots. After I got married wore saree on regular basis as I love wearing saree and I respect the attire brought down by my grandmothers and mothers.
I took #career break because of random #shoot timings, got busy with my family and kids. I was a housewife and used to get many compliments for the way I wore #sarees .
I used to help people #drape saree and so they started recommending me to others, this is how I realized To change this passion into profession. Saree is classic Indian attire and has perennial and eminent history and I want to popularize the art of perfect saree draping.

Concerned about the habit gaps in your life and career?

Want to build a habit? Great.

Want to kill a habit that has been slowing you down or harming you? Great.

#career #law #eLearning #lawsikho #habits
You need to understand how habit gets created and how they are perpetuated once the behavior is learned at the level of a habit.

It all starts with some kind of awareness.

Let’s say it’s a cigarette addiction. How is it going to start? I can speak from personal experience.
The first trigger is the awareness and the universal availability of cigarettes. Being aware of the existence of cigarettes is easy. Everyone knows. Cigarette companies make sure of that, through all sorts of promotional activities.

Do you know that many recent graduates with exceptional grades may still struggle to obtain entry-level jobs because of a lack of portfolios full of the right skill sets and lack marketable abilities?

Recently, I started my mentorship program and 90% of the participants have clear concerns about how to map out a successful career from their degrees. In other cases, they have questions on how to get successful careers out of their current jobs...

During my visit to Toronto in August, I sat with an old friend from my University of Saskatchewan days who literarily burst into tears while explaining the fears of her degrees not being enough...

And i say "Nne you have an interview, Here is your brief" Sometimes i even drive her to the venues. The bag must be secured. Finally, she got three offers.. and she decided to follow the Corporate Sales Career Path. Apparently i had to allow her follow her dream
Now she earns pratically more than me, she has been to places where i have never ever been and events where i only attend in my imagination. Sometimes, All we need to do is to stick our neck out for those we love.

IBM is accused of firing older workers. This is really about money - and doesn't just apply to IBM. Many companies sneakily create practices, communications & policies (like not subsidizing family health coverage)to discourage hiring older workers.

Age discrimination is especially common in #tech, where appearing "cool" carries a premium for recruiting top grads & younger talent.

In most careers, there comes an inflection point where junior employees can do the same job (or ~80% of it) for way less.

Sadly, to companies we're no more than "human resources," so employees must make themselves indispensable, esp. as their salaries creep up.

1) Develop a unique expertise: be known for it. Could be anything from a coding language to ideas generation to great #design.

"Did you ever sit down and plan your #career?"

If I ever did, it didn’t go to plan. I did well at school and university because I didn’t realise not doing well was an option. After university there was a moment - when you’re meant to use your degree to get a serious #job ...
with a big company - and I just didn’t. I did a masters in political philosophy, went to New York, moved to Paris, got a taste for not living in England and then moved to Berlin. I was doing odd jobs along the way to pay rent. I worked in shops selling bacon
sandwiches. I worked for a Royal silversmith in London. As a student I studied politics but worked as a classical singer for the BBC. Arriving in Berlin, I did English interviews for German publications and was writing, translating and working for magazines. I left Berlin

[Short Thread] So I just went to drop my car off for a service, then jumped in the courtesy bus to get a lift back home.

The guy looked like he was having a bad day so what did I do?
I told him a few jokes to break the ice, then he started telling me about his son & where he's taking his #career.

His whole mood completely flipped up on it's head as we drove through the city - it was incredible!

So how can you take this into your life? Well..
Instead of always making things about yourself, let OTHERS speak.

Analyse how people think, then give value

See I took the time to listen to him & it literally turned his day around - that's what really makes a difference - just listen to people and let them tell their story 🎉

It's time for my 2018 #design recap! Less writing, more @ideaplatz speaking and podcasts, and a job transition to boot. I expanded my public talks to include not just VUI but conversational UI, artificial intelligence, and improv for creativity. Here's my year... 1/
My first 2018 post was aimed at #VUI #design job seekers. Rather than reply to a series of 1:1 inquiries, I look for patterns to inspire published pieces. A VERY common question: "Any tips for my Amazon/Google/etc voice design interview?" #voiceFirst… 2/
In February 2018, I had the honor (+challenge!) of following @MrAlanCooper on the #Ixd18 mainstage. In my early days on the #EchoLook, I daydreamed about speaking to @ixdconf attendees about that product #design process. A literal #ux dream come true. 3/
