Today, SAB honors the memory of Charanpal Gill, a @UBC alumnus (BSW, MSW) and legendary community organizer who passed away last week.
He was 84.
1/7
Born in Hong Kong and raised in India, Charan already had an MA in Punjabi when he moved to BC in 1967 and found employment at a sawmill.
Thirteen years later, he co-founded the Canadian Farmworkers Union (CFU). 2/7
That same year, Charan also co-founded the British Columbia Organization to Fight Racism, which he served as president.
The BCOFR was instrumental in driving the Ku Klux Klan out of BC.
That's right, in the early 1980s, the KKK was terrorizing minority communities in BC. 3/7
This is the last part of the speech Charan gave at the Ban the Klan rally that the BCOFR organized on April 4, 1981.
As far as we know, this is the first time it is being published anywhere.
"Unite the people! Isolate racists!" 4/7
Then, in 1987, Charan co-founded the Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (@PICSSociety), which he served as CEO until 2017.
PICS broke new ground in providing services to recent immigrants, offering much-needed programs and seniors' housing. 5/7
Charan's many honors and awards include the Order of British Columbia, an honorary doctorate from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and a Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, just to name a few. 6/7
Please join us in commemorating Charan's inspirational legacy and, most importantly, continuing his invaluable work.
Rest in power, Charan Gill ✊🏾

For almost a year now, folks like us have been providing evidence of the strong links between the COVID skeptics/anti-maskers/anti-vaxxers and neo-Nazis.
And then folks like Chris Shaw have come rushing to defend them and call us "the real fascists."
But who is Chris Shaw? 1/15
Christopher A. Shaw is a professor in @UBCmedicine.
Yes, that's @UBC's Faculty of Medicine. In the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
His listed research interest is simply "Paralympics."
And he has a long history in the anti-vax movement. 2/15
In 2011, Shaw co-authored two studies with Lucija Tomljenovic linking vaccines and autism — a link that has been widely debunked and condemned as stigmatizing to people on the spectrum.
The World Health Organization called both studies "seriously flawed." 3/15
#vanpoli Vancouver's Non-Partisan Association will have a general meeting to elect a new board. Angelo Isidorou has stepped down.
But if the NPA really believes "in an inclusive, compassionate and caring city free from hate, stigma and discrimination," 7 more also have to go:
1. NPA president David Mawhinney
He oversaw Isidorou's addition to the board and signed off on a "Trumpian" press release that reads like Isidorou's work for far-right propaganda site The Post Millennial. He has refused to answer pertinent questions about extremism in his party.
2. NPA director Wes Mussio
He's an outspoken Trump & anti-mask supporter who called Dr. Henry "Dumb Bonnie." He challenged a reporter to a fight "if you are a man" & encourages people to join a far-right social media platform. He claims to be in the process of moving to Florida.
