#OneSA | One South Africa Movement leader Mmusi Maimane is set to reveal the most pressing concerns raised by the people ahead of Thursday’s State of the Nation Address.
#OneSA | Maimane is to formally table these with President Ramaphosa in writing, alongside 10 key solutions he must consider when he addresses the nation
#OneSA | Maimane: In President Ramaphosa’s previous
four SONA’s as president he has followed his predecessor’s example, skimming over the deep structural challenges & instead, rolling out lofty promises & commitments that are out of touch with both reality & the general populous.
#OneSA | Maimane: Today over 3000 schools still are without running water and 4000 pit toilets are used by learners across the country
#OneSA | Maimane: The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that SA’s health system is on its knees with rampant corruption, mismanagement and underfunding.
#OneSA | Maimane: Hundreds of millions of rands of the people’s money was stolen in PPE-related corruption during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the President’s own spokesperson.
#OneSA | Maimane: This very week we are still experiencing power cuts by Eskom in the form of
stage two loadsheddin.
#OneSA | Maimane: This is the most vivid indication of our current political system: an elitist, detached and self-
serving group of career politicians chosen by political parties to serve special interests above the interests of the country and its people.
#OneSA | Maimane: And the President is the ambassador and figurehead of this crooked system.
#OneSA | Maimane: It is time that the people have their say.
#OneSA | Maimane: We categorised the submissions received into these leading four broad themes:
#OneSA | Maimane: On behalf of the people, we submit the following top 10 solutions President Ramaphosa
cannot and should not ignore in his SONA tomorrow.
#OneSA | 1. Office of I-G for Education: The creation of an independent Office of Inspector-General (I-G) for Education would go a long way to improve basic education in South Africa.
#OneSA | 2. “My Share” Basic Income Grant: The introduction of “MyShare” – an unconditional cash grant paid to young South Africans who are still struggling to make ends meet.
#OneSA | Maimane adds the “MyShare” model will help build a more just society by acknowledging the past and
putting down the first blocks of a basic income floor.
#OneSA | 3. Rigorous and Continuous Lifestyle Audits: The permanent implementation of continuous lifestyle audits of all politicians and senior government officials.
#OneSA | 4. A SADC Vaccine Rollout Plan: Whether we like it or not, when it comes to procuring and rolling out a COVID-19 vaccination, we cannot pretend South Africa operates alone in its own bubble.
#OneSA | 5. Jobs and Justice Fund: The establishment of a Jobs and Justice Fund would amass empowerment funding from businesses and distribute it to real empowerment initiatives.
#OneSA | 6. Special Corruption Courts: The creation of Specialised Corruption Courts, with the mandate to investigate and prosecute.
Interministerial committees and integrity commissions are stalling tactics.
#OneSA | 7. Youth Year of Service - The introduction of a voluntary year of country service year that bridges the transition from school into the working world.
#OneSA | 8. Data to the People - The release of high-demand spectrum to lower data costs and increase access to online resources for young people.
Lack of access can never be the barrier for aspiration and the drive to learn and better oneself.
#OneSA | 9. Cut Size of Government: The current structure is too big to deliver and too confusing to
be efficient.
This reduction and repurposing needs to centre around the economic cluster.
#OneSA | Maimane: These two “superministries” must be
empowered and equipped.
The rest can go.
This is the surest way for SA to become a startup nation of employers rather than the state itself being the primary employer.
#OneSA | 10. Incentivising Excellence in the Public Sector: The introduction of an incentive-based scheme for all public sector employees.
Happening now: President Cyril Ramaphosa has taken to the podium to deliver the #SONA2021 before a hybrid sitting.
#SONA2021 | Ramaphosa briefly commemorates the release of the late former president Nelson Mandela from the Victor Verster Prison in Cape Town in 1990.
'It was clear that freedom was tangible.'
#SONA2021 | Ramaphosa likens the country's resilience to that of the fynboos.
"We have risen time and time again from the depths of darkness to herald a new day."
#TaxiViolence The Gauteng Provincial Government is now releasing to the public the findings of the Commission of Inquiry into Taxi Violence
#TaxiViolence MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure Jacob Mamabolo is releasing the report. He says they are pleased that this commission has concluded its work.
#TaxiViolence Mamabolo says the sector is riddled with a lot of violence. He describes the taxi sector as one that has the highest killings
