You know, if I hadn't joined this website 11 years ago, suffered death threats from Al-Qaeda & ISIS operatives, been slandered as a terrorist and received torrents of abuse from the far right and the far left, yesterday would have broken me. I would never have tweeted again.
There is an atmosphere on Twitter where it is quite literally an unbearable experience to exist as a trans person. The dehumanisation and targeted abuse is extreme. The toxicity is so intense that I spent nearly 16 (YES SIXTEEN) hours blocking the abuse I received.
Some of these abusive accounts go as far as accusing me of being a rapist, a pedophile, or someone that wants to commit genocide against Lesbians. The discourse is actually fully insane, deranged and disgusting. The people driving this campaign are totally radicalised.
It's no wonder the *silent majority* stay silent on trans issues, precisely because the extremity of the backlash for expressing moderate support for gender recognition is so terrifying that I can't believe that any normal person would ever want to use this website again.
I won't be shutting up, going away or being intimidated by slander, lies and outright hysteria accusing me of hating 50% of the world's population simply because I believe trans women are women. These people have zero ability to intimidate me.
But if anyone else experienced that level of pile on, especially some of the extreme racism and bigotry I was subjected to in the space of a short few hours, I could understand why they would never want to tweet, & therefore struggle to promote their own careers on this platform
There is a campaign to drive trans people out of public life. There is a campaign to silence any potential trans allies with extreme accusations of misogyny and homophobia. This campaign is not strictly online, it's endemic in the British press, trans people are vilified daily.
The aim of this campaign isn't one borne out of simple bigotry and ignorance though - it is entirely political. It is about attacking the very concept of trans rights, and they want the general public to be terrified of trans people in order to achieve this legislative change.
This is why I've had enough. I sat through enough morning news meetings where editors have discussed how to spin "the trans issue" today, just for clicks, just for outrage, just for entertainment. It's reprehensible and it's happening out in the open. This is what is taking place

Daily transphobia, whipped up by prominent opinion columnists at The Times and other mainstream British newspapers, are directly responsible for this hatred and discrimination currently playing out.
Too many of my followers see stuff like this and shrug. A fewer amount giggle and agree. It's dehumanisation. It intends to characterise all Trans people as dangerous sexual deviants. The opinion editors know EXACTLY what they are whipping up with this too.
This is on them. Directly. If it was directly on Corbyn for the antisemitism of his crankiest supporters, it is also directly on the leading "gender critical" pundits that routinely push the idea that Trans women are dangerous and predatory.

My Twitter right now is full of people claiming they always supported me but are now sickened by my speaking out for Trans rights, and an inbox flooded with emotional trans people and parents of trans children thanking me for speaking when so many others don't.
Like, I really don't care anymore. If you think that me publicly telling an anti-trans hate group to fuck off is a problem for you, I never wanted your support in the first place. Keep it.
When I was young, stupid on drugs and flirting with overdose, trans, queer and drag mothers SAVED my fucking life. I wouldn't even be here today without them. If you think I will even hesitate to choose them over you, you're fucking wrong.

LGB Alliance are an anti-trans group that were happy to share a platform with a US anti-LGBT, anti-Abortion far right group the Heritage Foundation because they share the agenda of opposing trans rights. This is the pathetic PR game they are playing.
The cheek of being accused of this by a group that was set up with the express intention of campaigning against greater legislative protection for trans people is so insidious and obscene. I stand by every word in my response to you and your rancid hate group.
Only a few weeks ago this group was writing private emails trying to get a gay friend of mine sacked from his job because of his pro-trans politics. This group is masquerading itself as a rights organisation while campaigning to spread hate. I will not play this game with them.

300 followers down, happy to lose all 45k of the others to. I will not apologise for standing in solidarity with transgender people. They have all my love and support, no matter what it costs my career or finances. I am never going to tolerate transphobia in my notifications.
To be honest it's really crushing being labelled a misogynist. I hate it, I was taught by my mother and my religion to respect women at all times. Fear of being baselessly accused of hating women built a wall of fear around me on the issue of trans rights.
But enough is enough. Things didn't get better with age. The millennial generation took over and adopted the same bigotries of the past. With what little platform I have, I promise to do better in protecting the trans community. I'm sorry I failed you in the past.

47% of women agree with the statement "a transgender woman is a woman", as opposed to 30% that don't. The idea that there is a "trans lobby" war against the majority of women is an insidious lie fed to you by the media.
The framing of this is SO critical. Claiming that anyone who supports trans rights is actually a misogynist is crucial to crippling debate on the topic. They want you to be too afraid to say how you feel. It's about exerting control over the narrative.
Simply for stating that "Trans Rights Matter" today I have been accused of some sort of virulent hatred for women for even suggesting such a thing. The truth is I am in the minority of men advocating for trans rights alongside the majority of women. That's the truth.

It’s flabbergasting to me how “being a nasty hateful bigot towards trans people online” has become an entire personality for some people. What is wrong with you? Just let them live their lives and leave them alone.
Instead of remarking on someone’s preferred pronouns, have you considered just shutting the fuck up? Try it.
