LAGOS COURT SENTENCES MAN TO 50 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR DEFILING 8-YEAR OLD GIRL
The Lagos State Sexual Offences Court, Ikeja on Monday, sentenced one Okechukwu Onyeakazi to 50 Years imprisonment for defiling 8- year old minor in Lagos.
Justice S. Nwaka-Gbagi delivered the Judgement in the charge No.ID/3901C/2017 between the State of Lagos vs Okechukwu Onyeakazi.
The defendant who pleaded guilty reportedly defiled the minor by putting his fingers into her bumbum and also inserted his penis into her vagina on a different occasion.
The convict was earlier arrested by the Police and arraigned on a - one - count charge of defilement which contravenes the Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State.
The Prosecuting Counsel, Adebayo Haroun , had told the court during the trial that the convict committed the offence in 2017 at Shogunle, area of Lagos State.
Haroun, however, urged the court to sentence the defendant accordingly having found him guilty of the charges against him.
Delivering judgement on the case, Justice S. Nwaka, held that the evidences and the two witnesses presented before the court by the prosecution were tenable and found the convict guilty as charged.
1. Our attention is drawn to the planned protest scheduled for Saturday February 13, 2021 at the Lekki Toll Gate for and against the opening of the Admiralty Toll Gate.
2. The State is aware of Sections 39 and 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which guarantees the Rights to Freedom of Expression and Peaceful Assembly. However, such right does not permit the violation of the Rights of other citizens in the State.
3. While the State recognises the importance of exercising the Rights to Peaceful protests, same cannot extend to blockage of roads and or preventing other members of the public from enjoying their Fundamental Rights to move freely within the State.
