And now, a few words from @jack speaking at the Goldman Sachs Tech & Internet 2021 Virtual Conference. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
It's really simple. We believe that the world and the Internet benefits from a strong public conversation layer. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
We want to contribute as much as we can to the conversational layer of the Internet. We started with short-form updates -- expanding from 140 characters to 280 characters and we have been exploring different use cases over time. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
Long-form is a use case that we’ve wanted to get in for quite some time and we acquired a company called Revue to help with that use case. Fleets is going after the ephemeral use case. And then more recently, audio conversations. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
We started pretty early in the form of Periscope -- in live conversations, mainly a broadcaster with a chat on top. We moved to enable audio only Periscopes and then also allowing people to come into the space and talk live as well. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
Spaces is an expansion of that work, and we see a lot of interesting possibilities with audio conversations. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
I think the most important thing for us is just not about any one of these parts. It's how they all connect together. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
And while a person might be coming to Twitter to tweet or have an audio conversation, it's likely that they’re not doing that 100% and being able to switch between these use cases and have them connect in a compelling and intuitive way. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
I think it's really powerful and allows us to build more of an ecosystem model where all these different use cases ultimately positively reinforce one another. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
And given that, we have a lot more insight, a lot more intent and a lot more surface area for our revenue models as we get more sophisticated with our revenue product and targeting capabilities over time. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
Content moderation is a practice that is not new to the Internet. The newness and part of what is interesting right now is how centralized it is. And that puts a lot of burden on us as a company. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
One of the things that we believe is really important and we testified before the U.S. Senate twice about this, is that we do believe that any company like ours taking on the practice of content moderation needs a lot more transparency around how it works. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
Not what the outcomes are -- but how it works. And that's where the transparency is very much lacking. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
Most of this work is moving to algorithms. Over time we want to make sure that people understand how our algorithms are affecting their experience. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
About 2 years ago, we added a switch to the top of our time line so that people can turn off our ranking algorithms. If you extend that idea, you can imagine people being able to choose different algorithms. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
And you can also imagine opening that up to third party developers, companies, and independent developers to build their own algorithms that people can choose from. Then you have what's effectively an app marketplace for algorithms. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
I cont. to believe our ability to surface topics & interest upfront & to enable ppl to follow them will have the greatest impact on our experience & our business because we have much more direct intent around what ppl care about & what they don't care about. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
I think it gets to the true power of Twitter, which is not just the biggest topics of the day like news and politics, K-pop, sports and gaming, but also to the long tail of niche topics. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
There is an entire universe of content on Twitter that people don't see because we make it so hard to find those accounts that cover the niche topics that they’re very, very interested in. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
We’ve started adding more city-based topics. But you can imagine how that goes down to a neighborhood level. And as it gets down to a neighborhood level, I'm probably more likely to tweet about what's happening in my neighborhood.#GSTech2021 $TWTR
I'm more likely to be open to introductions to small businesses in my neighborhood & more likely to take actions based on that. So that's a path. These things connect. We're trying to show off the longer tail of Twitter because that's where the magic really is. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
We want to make sure that we're really giving back to the idea of the open Internet and doing so in a way that encourages more start-ups and more experiments. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
We have a project called Bluesky, which intends to create a social media protocol, a standard, that ultimately, we intend to become a client of. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
So what that means for us and why I think it's important to our shareholders is that it increases by orders of magnitude the amount of public conversation that we'll have access to. The value of hosting content on a service like ours is diminishing greatly. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
The value of being able to recommend content on a large corpus of conversation is where everything is moving to. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
And that's why the focus on these recommendation algorithms and opening it up to third-party developers or companies to provide their own ranking algorithms and creating that marketplace and taking on a market-driven approach is so important. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
So I think when you have a company like ours that is subscribing and contributing more to an open protocol like what we're intending with Bluesky -- you just level the playing field even more. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
And we're competing on the true merit of where the world is moving rather than just hoisting and owning the content. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
I want us to build a suite of tools and experiences and revenue products that positively reinforce one another. And that we're not being hired by a business, whether it’s a large business or a small business or an individual for just one job. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
They're hiring us for multiple jobs. That creates durability in our business. If you follow the sequence of our revenue products, we started strong with brand advertising. It's an incredible business. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
Then we made a great push into MAP, which leads to greater performance advertising revenue, which can unlock a whole new category of businesses over time, including small and local businesses. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
That also gets us into more transactional campaign objectives and as I said before, those can come in many flavors. Commerce being just one of them. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
What I think COVID reminded us of is that there are global topics that touch nearly every single person in the world. And this is one of the reasons why we believe public conversation is so important because it helps us realize that much faster. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
It helps us learn about it much faster. It helps us spread ideas much faster. And I don't believe it's ending w/ COVID. There's going to be a number of topics that are not just relevant to any one particular nation, state or community, but relevant to the world. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
And that's where Twitter plays such an important role. And if we can meet that demand on a global scale, and then be able to showcase the more localized topics and more localized experiences, I think we have a winning combination. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
Because your life is not focused on just global concerns. It's probably an 80% / 20% mix of local and global, and maybe they vary in percentages of attention over time, but you need that mix. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
And if we can demonstrate that Twitter is one of the best places to build that mix and to engage with it, find out about it, there's a lot of strength there, and that's our focus. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
I do believe that COVID was a preview of more & more of these globally relevant topics emerging & needing to be discussed & acknowledged & seen on a global platform. Our role is to help showcase how local issues & more localized topics complement that as well. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
Now that we have a much more stable foundation given our ad server rebuild & a lot of the foundational work we’ve done on our tech stack, we want to invest and move faster. You probably saw some news reports around our partnerships with various cloud providers. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
What that really comes down to is a developer being able to ship a feature in the shortest amount of time. Years ago, it could have taken a year to ship a feature. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
Ideally, we can get to a state where within 2 weeks any engineer can build something that can actually ship to production so we can start learning from it. That’s our goal. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
Then we're just much more efficient and we have a higher probability of getting to better answers faster. #GSTech2021 $TWTR
