"Gov. Cuomo’s top aide privately apologized to Democratic lawmakers for withholding the state’s nursing-home death toll from COVID, telling them “we froze” out of fear the true numbers would “be used against us” by federal prosecutors."

2. After dropping the bombshell, DeRosa asked for “a little bit of appreciation of the context.” But instead of a mea culpa to the grieving family members of more than 13,000 dead seniors, she tried to make amends with the fellow Democrats for the political inconvenience to them.
3. In addition to stonewalling lawmakers on the the total number of nursing home residents killed by COVID-19, Cuomo’s administration also refused requests from the news media, and fought a Freedom of Information lawsuit filed by the Empire Center on Public Policy.
4. After NY AG released a damning report that estimated the deaths of nursing-home residents in hospitals would boost the grim tally by more than 50%, Health Commissioner Howard Zucker finally released figures showing the real total is 12,743 as of Jan. 19 (instead of 8,711).
5. Imagine the toll on nursing home residents taken by Gov. Cuomo's atrocious mandate issued on March 25, 2020 to admit Covid+ patients in nursing homes. That directive was a death sentence for thousands of nursing home residents in New York.
6. The COVID-19 death toll in nursing homes in New York is horrifying. Almost 50% of all COVID-19 deaths in New York were from nursing homes. The nursing home residents in New York constitute less than half a percent of the state population.

NYT: "There is a new absolutist health fad: the discouragement — or even prohibition — of any behavior that seems to increase the risk of coronavirus infection, even minutely."

Notice the idiocy of famed educational institutions.
2. There are two big questions to ask about these actions: How much are they doing to reduce the spread of the virus? And do they have any downside?

The answer to the first question, according to many experts, is: They seem to do little good.
3. Prohibiting outdoor activity is unlikely to reduce the spread of the virus, nor is urging people always to wear a mask outdoors.

Worldwide, scientists have not documented any instances of outdoor transmission unless people were in close conversation.

1. Covid-19 Update: Things Are Looking Up Worldwide

The pandemic is in retreat. The number of new coronavirus cases continues to plummet, as does the number of Americans hospitalized with symptoms. Deaths have also begun to decline.
2. Since reaching a peak on Jan. 8 — related to holiday gatherings — the number of confirmed new daily cases has fallen by almost 60%. The decline in actual cases is probably somewhat smaller, because the volume of testing has also fallen over the last few weeks. But still...
3. But still ... most of the decline in the chart above is real. We know that because the percentage of tests that came back positive has also dropped sharply (to 7 percent, from 14 percent on Jan. 8).

It is worth noting that having scoured thousands of hours of January 6 videos, the only 'weapon' that Democrats could locate anywhere in the security camera footage was a baseball bat being carried by one of the rioters.

That and the chants of "U.S.A! U.S.A! U.S.A!"

President Biden gives another bleak assessment on the economy while his Labor Department reports an increase in job openings.
2. The young Biden administration has already settled into an odd pattern of dissonance between the economic data the government reports and the president’s characterization of the economy.
3. Encouraging updates from federal agencies are followed by gloomy proclamations from the Oval Office intended to justify massive federal action. Tuesday brought another bleak political message on the heels of a positive market reading.

2. Time’s Molly Ball happily describes a “conspiracy” among the progressive left, big labor, big business and the Washington establishment to counter Donald Trump and suppress unwanted elements of U.S. political conversation before and after Election Day.
3. Like the various actors she describes at the heart of this vast campaign, Ms. Ball presents it as a virtuous effort to protect democracy from Mr. Trump and Covid-19.

1. Important NFL Findings That Should Be Publicized More

The NFL's giant COVID experiment ended yesterday with the improbable feat of an on-time Super Bowl, capping a season with no canceled games.
2. The NFL's successful season suggests that with the right resources, safety measures, and cooperation life can go on during the pandemic without uncontrolled spread of the virus.
3. The NFL decided early on that it wouldn't require its thousands of players, coaches and other staff to live in a "bubble," as other sports leagues had done.
