1. @NYGovCuomo became a pandemic star by contrasting himself with Trump

Cuomo crafted an IMAGE of being determined, honest and grounded in science

But 11 months later this image is falling apart

Follow along for a FACTUAL assessment of Cuomo's record

@NYGovCuomo 2. Cuomo WROTE A BOOK, published in October, celebrating his own leadership during the pandemic.

Cuomo writes that NY had "confronted and defeated" the virus, and had "achieved what all the experts told us was impossible."

Today, things look different.

popular.info/p/the-truth-ab…
@NYGovCuomo 3. Today, New York has 338 people hospitalized with COVID per million residents.

This is the HIGHEST NUMBER IN ANY STATE by a considerable margin.

popular.info/p/the-truth-ab…
@NYGovCuomo 4. Overall, 46K New Yorkers have died of COVID, which trails only California (47K), a state with 2x as many people.

On a per capita basis, New York has had more deaths than every state but New Jersey.

Cuomo made decisions that made things worse.

popular.info/p/the-truth-ab…
5. A new report by NY AG Letitia James (D) found Cuomo's order requiring nursing homes to accept residents w/COVID "may have put residents at increased risk of harm"

Cuomo dismissed criticisms of his nursing home policies in his book as "despicable"

popular.info/p/the-truth-ab…
6. James also found that Cuomo was severely undercounting the number of COVID deaths in nursing homes. After James' report, Cuomo released new numbers which show that nursing home deaths were much higher than previously disclosed.

popular.info/p/the-truth-ab…
7. A top Cuomo aide told a group of Democratic legislators that the administration did not release accurate nursing home data earlier because they were concerned the data "was going to be used against us."

popular.info/p/the-truth-ab…
8. Cuomo's missteps weren't limited to nursing homes. He didn't issue a shelter in place order until March 22.

It was floated by the NYC mayor on March 17 and Cuomo dismissed it

"The fear, the panic, is a bigger problem than the virus."

popular.info/p/the-truth-ab…
9. A delay of 5 days might not seem like a big deal.

But "Columbia University epidemiologists later estimated that a week’s delay in March quintupled the number of deaths in the New York metro area in the pandemic’s first two months."

popular.info/p/the-truth-ab…
10. Today, Cuomo, who claimed to be guided by scientific expertise, has a much different perspective

“When I say ‘experts’ in air quotes, it sounds like I’m saying I don’t really trust the experts. Because I don’t. Because I don’t," Cuomo said on 1/29/21

12. Final note: COVID is an extremely complex problem. I'm not aware of any political leaders who have handled the situation perfectly. Nor should we expect them to.

But only one, that I know of, wrote a book in the middle of the pandemic celebrating their own leadership.

1. So Facebook banned all Australian news sources from its platform because of PROPOSED legislation that would require Facebook to negotiate compensation for Australian media outlets

It's not even a law yet.

That's important.
2. Facebook's dramatic action to cut off news to Australians (and others) in the middle of a pandemic isn't a RESPONSE to a law.

There is no law passed yet.

It's an attempt to BULLY the Australian government into not passing the law.
3. Facebook's actions today can best be understood as an aggressive lobbying effort.

It's showing Australian government its willing to follow through with the ban.

Tough to square this bare-knuckled approach with the company's supposed commitment to free speech.

1. Yesterday, Congressman @BennieGThompson, with the assistance of the @NAACP, filed a civil lawsuit against Trump for violating the KKK Act.

The lawsuit lays out how 1/6 was not just an attack on democracy but a racist attack on democracy

popular.info/p/trump-sued-f…
@BennieGThompson @NAACP 2. The basis of the 1/6 riot was the false voter fraud claims by Trump, Giuliani and other allies

These claims of voter fraud across multiple states were made up out of whole cloth. They were based on nothing

And yet they all had something in common

popular.info/p/trump-sued-f…
@BennieGThompson @NAACP 3. In each state Trump and Giuliani sought to invalidate votes in cities with large Black populations.

In PA it was Philadelphia

In MI it was Detroit

In GA it was Atlanta

The insurrection was an effort to nullify the ballots of Black voters

UPDATE: @Walmart and @SamsungUS have finally terminated their relationship with @mschlapp's lobbying firm.

Schlapp, who also chairs @CPAC, has relentlessly attacked the BLM movement & pushed the lie that the election was stolen from Trump through fraud

popular.info/p/update-comca…
@Walmart @SamsungUS @mschlapp @CPAC .@mschlapp's firm was being paid $50K/quarter by Walmart and $20K/quarter by Samsung.

The blow was cushioned by a $750K Q4 payment by Pete Petit

Petit, who was convicted of securities fraud in November, hired Schalpp to help him secure a pardon from Trump

Petit did not get one

1. As the Senate debates Trump's responsibility for the events of Jan 6, a relatively new group is organizing the next insurrection

And this one could be more sophisticated, efficient & violent

At the center of the scheme is a familiar name: Ammon Bundy

popular.info/p/the-next-ins…
2. Bundy, who occupied a federal wildlife refuge by force in 2016, has created a new org called People's Rights

People's Rights wants to enable people to "call a militia like they’d call an Uber and stage a protest within minutes."

popular.info/p/the-next-ins…
3. The rapidly growing group, which Bundy says now has 50K members, aims to be able to "dispatch 10 protesters to a scene in 10 minutes, 100 in 100 minutes and 1,000 in 1,000 minutes."

1. Of all the things Republicans Senators are saying about the impeachment trial, "I blame the rioters, not Trump," is the dumbest
2. TRUMP:

* Invented the lie that the election was stolen

* Told his supporters to come to DC on Jan 6 and get "wild"

* Held a rally where he spoke to the mob for an hour and told them to "fight like hell"

* Instructed the mob to march to the Capitol
3. AFTER THE RIOT THAT LEFT SEVERAL PEOPLE DEAD, TRUMP:

* Described it as "things and events that happen" when an election is stolen

* Said everyone should look back on the riot fondly: "Remember this day forever!"

1. Today, Trump's second impeachment trial starts.

Trump's lawyers and Republican Senators will focus on the argument that the proceeding is unconstitutional because Trump is no longer president.

This short thread will explain why that is B.S.

Follow along if interested.
2. The question of whether Trump could be impeached after he left office is irrelevant

Trump was impeached before he left office

The question is whether the Senate still have the authority to try the impeachment after Trump leave office

The Constitution answers this question
3. Article I, Section 3, Clause 6: "The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments."

ALL IMPEACHMENTS.

ALL.

IMPEACHMENTS.
