I've just been told that Highland Park Texas (@HP_Texas) will be opening up the first floor of its public library as a warming center between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.
Incidentally, I just drove by it and it has a giant LOVE sign outside that is lit up.
I'm not saying that I am responsible for getting Highland Park to trend on Twitter, but I'm also not not saying that
CORRECTION: this is a sign NEAR the library, as indicated by the small sign in the bottom left corner
Basically, all of Texas' infrastructure is now in a state of failure. Millions are without power. Hundreds of thousands of people if not millions currently do not have access to drinking water. Hundreds of thousands of people's homes are likely to be damaged by bursting pipes.
This disaster has unleashed untold suffering on the population of a state that has suffered greatly over the past year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Our state government has failed us.
It is unclear how long it will take to correct for the damage done by this winter hell storm.
“We were supposed to have rolling outages, so people could stay warm, but I guess my neighborhood didn't make the cut, so I guess we're all supposed to hang out in a warming center all week until they get around to us,” Bobby Woods, a 27-year-old Dallas resident said.
“They’ve done a horrible job…. If it wasn’t for the local grocery store being open, serving as a safe haven for us to stay warm and grab something to eat, we would be in very terrible shape,” said another Dallas resident, Tiffany Jackson.
We need an investigation into why these "rolling" outages haven't been rolling into rich enclaves like Highland Park and Preston Hollow or into Downtown Dallas commercial buildings while other parts of the city have remained without power for the entire day.
I don't mean to be hyperbolic, but to all my friends outside of Texas: we are in a state of emergency due to this cold weather that will likely result in many deaths and our government has barely moved an inch to provide shelter for people who have gone 24 hours without power.
Over one million people are still without electricity across the state and are facing frigid temperatures inside their homes.
The city of Dallas has a population of 1.3 million.
