Minus 15 C (5 F) – that’s the average year-round temperature at 20,000 feet above sea level, which is where the Siachen Glacier War of April of 1984 raged – the highest battlefield on the planet [1]. The brief conflict was fought between
long-time enemies India and Pakistan for control of a massive Himalayan ice field in the disputed Kashmir border region. The Indian army launched a pre-emptive assault on the rugged 2,500 sq. km (1,000 sq. mile) territory after its intelligence division suspected that
the Pakistanis might be planning their own attack up there. It turned out that both armies ordered their mountain equipment and cold weather gear from the same British supplier. When the Indian military learned of a huge purchase made by Islamabad, commanders quickly
mobilized 3,000 troops to capture the summit first. [2] Pakistan’s army later tried unsuccessfully to dislodge the Indians. They lost more than 1,700 soldiers in the attempt. Indian casualties were lighter at 800. New Delhi has occupied the heights ever since.

Today is the anniversary of the Meghna Bridge massacre of 1950. The history:
When the West Pakistani elite, led by Aziz Ahmed,ICS,Chief Secretary of East Pakistan (described by fellow ICS B K Nehru as “notoriously anti-Hindu”) failed to loosen the hold of the Hindu
intelligentsia on the cultural life of E Pakistan they decided to drive the entire lot out by widespread murder, arson and rape. The Meghna Bridge massacre was a milestone in this.
The railway bridge is across the kilometre-wide Meghna river between Bhairab Bazar and Ashuganj
stations. On this fateful day in 1950 ALL trains crossing the bridge were stopped while on the bridge. Then almost ALL Hindus in ALL trains crossing the bridge were knifed and thrown into the river. Presumably to be drowned or eaten alive by the crocodiles for which Meghna is

Brilliant coinage by @narendramodi Reminds me of an incident when I was Governor of Tripura. #Andolanjeevi
When the Broad Gauge railway connection to Agartala was being inaugurated,in the public meeting the then Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said,“all this was made possible by
our ‘Andolan’ which we have been doing since time immemorial.
Next it was my turn to speak. I said,”I have served the Indian Railways for 23 years, and I have never heard of a millimetre of Railway line being laid by any ‘Andolan’. Railway lines are laid when there is
political will to lay it,and thereafter we engineers have to work very hard on them”.
Manik babu did not seem pleased at all.

Mamata,Congress,CPI(M) all bleat in unison,“National assets are being sold away”!
But they will! Because the government has no business to go into business. This Nehruvian prescription, blindly copying now-defunct USSR,had ruined the country’s economy. We were on the point of
reneging on our debts in 1991 and got out of it only by pledging our gold to IMF.
Cut back to 1945. Japan,Germany,Malaysia,Singapore were ruins. South Korea was so till 1953. Look at those countries today and look at India! They followed the private enterprise route and
prospered. We followed Nehru’s ‘mixed economy’ and industrial licensing route and kept making 1950’s Ambassador cars till 1980s and that too by selected parties. This was not even socialism, this was crony capitalism.
Thank God for Narasimha Rao (practically disowned by the

Today is the anniversary of the Marichjhaanpi massacre. This day in 1978 Jyoti Basu's policemen and goons together set upon 40,000 helpless and beleaguered Hindu refugees, all Dalits,in an island of that name in the Sundarban delta Media were totally blocked off.
Their history...
The poor creatures were victims of Islamic persecution in erstwhile East Pakistan. Mostly illiterate fishermen and peasants by profession, they nevertheless refused to convert and came to India in a horrible condition. Nehru's government first denied them rehabilitation, then
packed them off to inhospitable Dandakaranya. Communists, then in opposition, stoutly opposed this and insisted that they must be rehabilitated in West Bengal. So when the CPI(M) came to power in 1977 the refugees thought they would be allowed to live in West Bengal and
