Just over three years after President Trump's "commission on election integrity" was shut down after it systematically excluded its own Democratic members from participating, the RNC has now launched a nakedly partisan "election integrity committee." thehill.com/homenews/campa…
These commissions have become a recurring tool in the right-wing playbook for perpetuating the myth of widespread voter fraud and justifying new restrictions that make it harder for Americans to vote, so let's talk about them for a minute. (thread)
After 2016, President Trump repeatedly insisted that he had won the popular vote as well as the Electoral College. He had, in fact, lost by nearly 3 million votes, so he began falsely claiming that millions of illegal votes were cast. And he set up a commission to investigate.
The Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity was nominally tasked with promoting fair and secure elections. In practice, the group headed by voter-fraud propagandist Kris Kobach and its core members were working to dig up evidence to support new limits on voting.
Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap, a Democrat, had joined the commission in good faith in an effort to strengthen elections, but he and other Democrats quickly found themselves shut out of the group's work. He went to court. americanoversight.org/investigation/…
We represented Secretary Dunlap in his lawsuit, and when a federal judge ultimately ruled that Kobach and the PACEI staff must share internal documents with Dunlap, the Trump White House shut down the entire commission. americanoversight.org/statement-trum…
When Secretary Dunlap ultimately obtained and released 8,000 pages of commission records, they revealed that the group had uncovered no new evidence of widespread voter fraud of the kind the president and his allies alleged. americanoversight.org/voter-fraud-co…
That wasn't the end of it. Fast-forward to 2020 and multiple states had begun setting up their own "voter fraud" task forces. We began investigating the task forces in Georgia, Texas, Kentucky, Arizona, and Nevada. americanoversight.org/investigation/…
After we sued Georgia for records of its Absentee Ballot Fraud Task Force, the state released thousands of pages of documents — none of which included any substantive information that suggested the group had identified any widespread fraud to investigate. americanoversight.org/georgias-secre…
Separate records we obtained from two counties in Georgia confirmed that the group had met only once and that mail-in absentee voting was secure and accurate. A fact that was, of course, re-confirmed by post-election recounts and audits. americanoversight.org/georgia-offici…
And now this week, with the 2020 election over, votes counted and recounted with no suggestion that there was any widespread fraud, and with Trump once again claiming (falsely) that there was, the RNC has brought us full circle with yet another "election integrity" group.
We will continue investigating partisan efforts to spread the myth of voter fraud to justify new voting restrictions. This tactic does not appear to be going away, so we'll keep exposing the truth. Track our investigations here: americanoversight.org/areas_of_inves…

Early on in the pandemic, DHS announced that its headquarters would be taking over the processing of all Covid-related FOIA requests. So, if you submitted a request to FEMA for FEMA-specific documents, DHS headquarters would process the request. #FOIAFriday Image
This change complicated the FOIA process and was not consistent with usual practices. For example, under this policy, DHS still needed to have FEMA FOIA officers conduct the search for responsive records.
Plus, under the policy, one single office was reviewing and managing many more FOIA requests than normal. It's hard to imagine that this didn’t create an even greater FOIA backlog.

In September, after the North Carolina state elections board introduced new procedures to make it easier for voters to fix errors with their mail-in ballots, the Trump campaign pressured local officials to ignore the new rules. apnews.com/article/virus-…
CNN also reported in September that the Trump campaign had contacted local officials in key swing states — including Wisconsin and Georgia — with requests for detailed information about voting procedures.

The day before the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol, the Republican Attorneys General Association’s fundraising arm, the Rule of Law Defense Fund, sent robocalls urging people to attend the “March to Save America” on Jan. 6. We’re investigating.
americanoversight.org/investigation/…
“I’m calling for the Rule of Law Defense Fund with an important message,” the call started, before describing plans for the crowd to march from a park near the White House to the Capitol to “call on Congress to stop the steal.”

RAGA and RLDF quickly sought to distance themselves from the violent protest. In a statement on Jan. 7, then-RAGA Executive Director Piper said that RAGA and RLDF “had no involvement in the planning, sponsoring, or the organization” of the protest.

New: We obtained new DOJ records regarding Donald Trump’s corrupt Ukraine scheme that led to his first impeachment.
americanoversight.org/document/doj-e…
In a December 2019 email thread, Jay Bratt from DOJ’s National Security Division described a “package” received by two Ukrainian legislators that alleged U.S. grant money to fight corruption was being mismanaged and misspent.
Enclosed in the package was a similar letter to Mick Mulvaney, then the White House chief of staff, that also referenced a third letter sent to Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Right-wing figures including then-Pres. Trump put significant pressure on Georgia officials to overturn the 2020 election results after Biden won the state. We’re seeking records from the state and federal levels that could shed light on these efforts.

In a Jan. 2 call with Georgia Sec. of State Raffensperger, Trump pressured Raffensperger’s office to “find” him votes. “All I want to do is this: I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have,” he said.

The Washington Post also reported that Trump had made a similar push in a call with a Georgia election investigator the previous month, directing the investigator to “find the fraud.”
