I know #49ers fans all have strong opinions on Jimmy Garoppolo, & it’s been a point of contention.
I’ve been vocal that I think it’s time to strongly explore other options, and this is a thread as to why I feel that way:
Here we go...
Garoppolo ranked 31st in intended air yds per attempt in 2019 & 32nd in 2020. However, he still had the 7th worst INT % at 2.7 in 2019 & the 2nd worst in 2020 at 3.6.
That’s too many INTs considering JG doesn’t push the ball downfield.
Also, JGs playoff INT % was 5.1%
We’re they all his fault?
According to @fboutsiders, Garoppolo’s ‘19 adjusted INT % (which account for INTs off receivers hands & dropped INTs by defense) was 3.6%. Only Winston, Allen, Rivers, Mayfield, Dalton & Jones were worse.
In playoffs, JGs adjusted rate was nearly 10%
Overall, Garoppolo’s had 34 turnovers in 33 starts with the #49ers.
The other issue is injuries. Shanahan is the only HC in 49ers history to have 3 seasons of 10 losses or more simply because his QB can’t stay on the field.
Garoppolo’s begun a season as starting QB 4 times...
...In 2016 with NE he was hurt in game 2. In 2018 with SF game 3, and 2020 game 2 and then got hurt again. That’s a shoulder, ACL & two separate high ankle sprains.
Unless you count Alex Smith, No QB has missed more games than Garoppolo’s 23 since 2018.
So for me, the high turnover rate plus the injuries are too much to stomach for $26 mill. 49ers can’t afford another lost season, especially when they’re 1 of only 3 teams to have 10-plus losses in 5 of last 6 years
