I did a lot of compass work in the Yukon cutting the boundary. The insanity of magnetic declination moving east or west along a straight line boundary was real. So we literally cut a straight line in the forest so pilots could see the border. 
Now I know you are going to say "GPS bro" but GPS signals are not controlled by an individual, are not accurate (16 feet to one meter on a good day), requires batteries and clear sky removing much of the thinking and scale essential to bush survival. gps.gov/systems/gps/pe…
