Furthermore, the number of times Indra defeating Vritra (Jrambha) or destroying 99 mountainous fortresses of vritra (Shaila) to release the water hoarded by the asura is referred to again and again.

The context of Indra's garva-haraNa by Giridhar or sheelabhanga of Ahalya by Indra et al is very well known. I am sure it was very well known during Bhushan's time too (like all kathas, this too has a context to it).
