ICYMI THREAD: a round-up of new plans that we’ve published over the last couple of weeks. @TfL & @MayorofLondon are working hard to give people the option of walking & cycling for essential journeys, freeing up precious space on public transport & our roads for those who can't.
First up, scheme that fills the 1km gap along Tooley St between C4 at Tower Bridge Rd & the new London Bridge cycle lanes. Includes a new pedestrian space at the “Tooley St Triangle” where a superfluous slip road will be closed to cars. More details here: consultations.tfl.gov.uk/general/3269f8…
Over the river, we’re filling the crucial gap between C2 at Aldgate and C3 at Tower Hill, with a 0.5km bi-directional track on Mansell St.
We’re reallocated one of the two general traffic lanes & retaining the bus lane. This will make the street more efficient & less polluted.
This will unlock a safe cycle route from Stratford to the West End, to Kings Cross & Kentish Town, and also to south London, linking up with further projects below. More details here: consultations.tfl.gov.uk/general/6d9133…
In south London, we continue to upgrade CS7, with the latest plans for the section between Oval and the Elephant. A combination of cycle lanes, better bus lanes and junction improvements feature here.
We’re also making it easier to get between Oval & Streatham, with new bus lanes and turning restrictions at junctions to help protect people cycling along 5km of the A23.
Combined with our plans for Streatham Hill, getting from south London into town will be much easier and safer this summer. Details here: consultations.tfl.gov.uk/general/a70392…
These changes are working. Cycling in Outer London was up by 22% last year, despite a massive drop in the overall number of journeys.
Nearly half of all journeys in London were walked or cycled between April and June, up from 29% before the pandemic.
More to come next week!
