Reviewing @JobyWarrick's new book on Syria, @gcaw claims that Ake Sellström, who led the UN probe of 2013 Ghouta sarin attack, "proved the Syrian government’s culpability." That would be news to Ake Sellström, who has repeatedly said he could not establish culpability:
Q to Sellström, re: Ghouta rockets: "And are those the sorts of rockets that would be in possession of the Syrian military?"

Sellström: "Yes, but also in possession of others."

Q: "So the rebels could also have them?"

Sellström: "I would think so."
.@gcaw claims that "every reputable source" blames the Syrian gov't for "all" major chemical attacks in Syria. That's also false. The OPCW's own inspectors undermined the Douma allegation -- but had their findings censored, a cover-up he completely omits. thenation.com/article/world/…
With Ghouta, MIT's Ted Postol found that the rockets had to have been fired from militant-controlled, not government, areas (nytimes.com/2013/12/29/wor…). Sy Hersh also reported that UK & US intel had major doubts -- a fact confirmed by Barack Obama. Not "reputable", @gcaw?

New @PushbackShow: As thousands of Haitians defy repression to protest Jovenel Moise, the Biden admin continues a long US tradition of backing right-wing autocrats and undermining Haiti's popular movements. w/ guest Daoud Andre:
Thank you to @freedomrideblog for making this one happen!
This segment has a lot of info on the current crisis in Haiti, including how the US helped install Moise & his predecessor, and coerce Haiti into betraying Venezuela, its historical ally. This colonial meddling dates back to when Haiti became the hemisphere's first free country.

1/ I appreciate that @PeterBeinart highlights the murderous impact of US sanctions worldwide. It's a vital issue, and he deserves credit for bringing attention to it. Unfortunately he adopts the imperial mentality underlying the sieges he opposes:
nytimes.com/2021/02/15/opi…
2/ @PeterBeinart says sanctions "might be more defensible — or at least briefer — if they stood a reasonable chance of success" or "married to remotely realistic objectives."

So it's OK to strangle Venezuela and Syria if we could overthrow their leaders? Are we Darth Vader?
3/ In reality, where all people are equal, US has no right to destroy others’ economies and health care systems, no matter how “realistic” the “objectives” are. There’s also something called international law and the UN Charter, which bars the unilateral imposition of sanctions.

New @PushbackShow: Crippling US sanctions imposed under the Caesar Act are decimating war-ravaged Syrian civilians, are illegal, and should be lifted, UN Special Rapporteur @AlenaDouhan says. Video/transcript: thegrayzone.com/2021/01/14/un-… via @TheGrayzoneNews
The US economic warfare against poor, war-ravaged Syria is egregiously ignored in the US media & political system. I asked the UN rapporteur on sanctions, Alena Douhan, if US sanctions on Syria are similar to the genocidal US sanctions on Iraq in 1990s. She says yes: Image
According to the UN Special Rapporteur, US sanctions on Syria are so crippling that they prevent import of staples like *toothpaste*, under the pretense that toothpaste could have a military use. They also seriously hinder the import of medicine & medical equipment. Pure sadism: Image

.@mikepompeo claims that Iran is now Al Qaeda's Middle East home base. As he well knows, that distinction actually belongs to Syria's "rebel"-held Idlib province. Former US envoy Brett McGurk has called Idlib "the largest Al Qaeda safe haven since 9/11":
What US diplomats will be less candid about in public is the fact that Al Qaeda's Idlib province home base was established thanks to US TOW anti-tank missiles, weapons, and other support for Syrian "rebels." You can read all about it in mainstream sources: ImageImageImageImage
More on how US arming of and coordination with Syrian "rebels" helped Al Qaeda establish, in Syria, its largest safe haven since 9/11: ImageImageImage

The Intercept has taken heat for mishandling the Reality Winner leak. In fairness, she would've gotten caught anyway. IMO, TI deserves far more criticism for mischaracterizing what the leak actually says, just to show liberals it can Russiagate. There, it's dishonest & shameless.
This artice is the latest example: theintercept.com/2020/12/30/rea…
Reality Winner is not a "whistleblower" -- what exactly did she expose? Nothing. The Intercept falsely claims her leak "was about Russian interference in U.S. elections" & detailed phishing attacks by Russian military intelligence", but it did nothing of the sort.
