In our follow-up study of the longest cohort of COVID-19 individuals in the US, we found that 30% of participants reported worse health and quality of life, compared to how they felt before their infection. Additionally, 8% said they weren’t able to carry out daily chores.
Most were mildly ill, without chronic medical problems, and never required hospitalization. To see such high proportions with symptoms at 6 most out was surprising. Our study was small and geographically limited. We look forward to more studies from a diversity of populations.
We will continue follow-up to two years. We will also look back for early immune signatures that may predict development of long COVID, to help us develop better prognostic indicators and better understand causality. Thx to HAARVI volunteers, as always, for your generosity.
