I have come to realise that there are alot of people wanting to go into or have gone into what they calling free range poultry. Yes literally thousands of road runners running freely.
They have various breeds like Black Astrolope, Koekoek and Bosch.
They breed them hatch & sell the chicks.
I want to put it out there that this is NOT good for the industry if not monitored properly or even audited by a government compartment.
This is a very serious health risk to the industry as these birds are not vaccinated or have any form of bio security in place.
On a properly controlled free range farm. There would be a poultry house that is opened up in the morning for the birds to go onto the range.
This should be adequate in size for the population of birds housed. Cleared of all trees and debris. The range should be limed at the end of each flock & the sheds washed & properly disinfected. There should be french drainage to prevent flooding and risk of birds catching...
Peritonitis. All birds should be vaccinated and bloods taken throughout the flock to check for various issues.
This type or practice needs structure and to be properly monitored. There is no flock traceability, vaccination programs or records of any type kept.
It is very poor to say the least. If there is an Avian Influenza or Newcastle outbreak it could cause some serious problems for the industry. In June 2017 a highly contagious strain H5N8 was discovered in πΏπΌ it was luckily contained. It could have decimated the industry.
There needs to be strong measures put in place to prevent any issues occurring in the future.
