BREAKING: Aurora releases the investigation it commissioned into the death of Elijah McClain at the hands of city police and fire. Story, which will be updated as I read, here: denverpost.com/2021/02/22/eli… (It includes a link to the full report.)
Notable: Investigators hired by the city were not able to interview the officers or paramedics involved in Elijah McClain's death. Unclear who denied that access - the individuals themselves or the agencies. They did interview other staff.
I'm reading through the report, thus far takeaways are: Police had no legal standing to force McClain to stop walking, no standing to frisk him, and they used an excessive amount of force. Also, the initial investigation by Aurora PD was deeply flawed. denverpost.com/2021/02/22/eli…
The Denver Post has maintained a timeline of all the events during and after the death of Elijah McClain at the hands of police. Includes a review of the controversy around commissioning this investigation: denverpost.com/2020/06/26/eli…
I didn't know this, but according to the report, the person who called 911 about Elijah McClain acting "weird" was 17 years old.
New: Sheneen McClain, Elijah McClain's mom, releases a lengthy statement through her attorneys. She says "she is relieved that the truth surrounding the death of her son is finally coming to light."
New: Just got off the phone with Elijah McClain's mom, Sheneen, who said the report just confirmed what they already knew. However, she is happy the report definitively said her son did nothing wrong. “I’m happy Elijah is no longer labeled a suspect, that he is labeled a victim.”
I'll add her full comments to this story: denverpost.com/2021/02/22/eli…. I'll also be adding information from the special city council session on the report starting at 5 p.m. Mountain Time. Anyone can watch that here: auroratv.org
Lead investigator is currently doing an overview of the report on Elijah McClain's death. He just played a very brief segment of body camera and said that is the only footage that will be played tonight, out of respect for McClain and his family. Said the video is hard to watch.
One of the experts that wrote the investigation into how Aurora PD investigated itself after Elijah McClain's death gives this as an example of how detective asked leading questions of officers involved, seemingly trying to extract specific exonerating responses.
Well, city council meeting on the report ended without enough time for council to ask questions or say anything about the report. They ran out of time. Mayor says they'll schedule more time later for council to discuss and ask questions.
We'll have more reporting tomorrow.
