NYPD just disclosed details on dozens of surveillance technologies. We have questions.

New from @JoelmCarter & me for @techpolicypress & @EngagingNews:
techpolicy.press/disclosures-of…
The POST Act, passed during the height of the George Floyd protests last summer, requires NYPD to disclose its complement of surveillance tech.

Last month, NYPD released the first tranche of three dozen briefs. We look at what they say- and don't say.

For instance, consider the disclosure for "internet attribution management infrastructure", a suite of tools that permits NYPD to engage on social media and in message apps covertly.

How many undercover online profiles does NYPD operate? techpolicy.press/disclosures-of…
cc to the City Council sponsors for the #POSTAct, including @CoreyinNYC, @JustinBrannan, @cmenchaca, @ReynosoBrooklyn @JimmyVanBramer, @bradlander, @StephenLevin33 and PA @JumaaneWilliams. Time to look at these disclosures- is this what you had in mind? techpolicy.press/disclosures-of…
We link to work from @EFF analysts @mguariglia and @maassive.

1/ Democracies around the world are all mired in one crisis or another. Distortions in information ecosystems is one reason why. Big ideas for ways to funnel billions of dollars back into journalism are rare- it’s time to take a gamble on more than one.
technologyreview.com/2021/02/20/101…
2/ Such an idea rose to the world’s attention this week: an Australian law that would compel search and social media platforms to pay news organizations through an arbitration mechanism, an approach now being considered by lawmakers in other governments. technologyreview.com/2021/02/20/101…
3/ But in view of the objections to this approach, what other options exist? If new subscription models are not enough to sustain the media industry, what else can be done to push billions of dollars back into journalism?technologyreview.com/2021/02/20/101…

U.S. investigating possible ties between Roger Stone, Alex Jones and Capitol rioters- @DevlinBarrett & @hsu_spencer:
washingtonpost.com/local/legal-is…
Here is Stone, for instance with two Proud Boys leaders and Infowars personality Owen Shroyer at the December Stop the Steal rally.
WaPo: "Shortly after the riot, Jones said on Infowars that he was invited by the White House on about Jan. 3 to “lead the march” to the Capitol, and that he paid nearly $500,000, mostly donated, to help organize the event on the Ellipse."

1/ One year ago, nearly every Democratic Senator said it's not a trial without witnesses. Here is a thread of nearly every Senator expressing some form of this sentiment.
2/ @AaronBlake laid out 7 types of witnesses that could shed more light "on an important event in our nation’s history — including Trump’s culpability for it." Capitol rioters themselves, Trump aides , Brad Raffensperger, Dustin Stockton, Mark Meadows, and Trump himself.
3/ @renato_mariotti presented a strong case that "to change the dynamic of the trial, House Managers will need to call witnesses." politico.com/news/magazine/…

Remember this- a year ago 49 Senators said it's not even a trial if you don't have witnesses. What about this time, when they have the majority?

1) House impeachment managers plan to use video evidence substantially in next week's trial.
nytimes.com/2021/02/07/us/…
2) I predict not all of the video will be from January 6th. While it reached a fevered pitch on January 6th and the days after the election, Trump’s false claims started long before. He was explicit about the "stolen election" narrative from last summer.
3) @rgoodlaw and I analyzed dozens of hours of Parler videos of the events of January 6th at the US Capitol. They reveal the psychology of the crowd, and how its violent behavior was a direct result Trump’s rhetoric. justsecurity.org/74335/fight-fo…
