The IA Senate is currently debating the sweeping #electionslaw bill that would reduce early voting period, limit absentee voting process, amongst other things. Republicans discussing an amendment that would change the poll close time in Iowa from 9 p.m. to 8 p.m. #ialegis
In defense, Sen. Roby Smith (R) says county auditors asked him years ago to change IA law to close polls at 8PM - "Take a look at auditors. They are ones that suggested this"
Says nat'l average is 7:30PM & that "we put voters on roller coasters" with different poll closing times
That amendment passed along party lines.
On the Senate floor, GOP Sen. Jim Carlin (running against US Sen. Chuck Grassley) said "My caucus and the Republican caucus believe the election was stolen."
Went on to suggest laws changing in states like PA pre-election allowed for fraud; this has been refuted by the courts
Responding to argument that the bill will restore faith in Iowa elections/integrity, Sen. Joe Bolkcom (D) says: people have only lost faith in elections because Republicans have "manufactured, fostered and encouraged this through silence, conspiracy theories and cult behavior."
Should add that he said "most of" the Republican caucus. Ran out of tweet characters
