there's a lot of reasons why I can't be a Christian anymore, but the one on my mind these days is its utter failure to deliver on its core premises.
if God defeated sin on the cross / resurrection, why is there still so much fuckin sin?
no theological answer satisfies that.
Christianity has had 2000 years to prove that it is uniquely able to reduce sin and spread justice. It has failed.
i see no evidence that where Christianity has gone, sin has decreased and justice has increased.
in fact, i see a lot of the opposite reality: where there is Christianity there is oppression, colonizing, abuse.
the excuse is all the same: the church is made of imperfect people.
i don’t give a shit.
Christianity claims that it has something better to offer: not only a slight advantage over normal rates of human fuckery, but an actual supernatural defeat of the power of sin!
the medicine doesn't outperform the placebo.
Christianity has shown itself absolutely unable to overcome sin in the world.
indeed, the Spirit of God has not even been able to save the Church from being assimilated into the sinful power structures it was supposed to disrupt.
if Christianity can’t save itself from sin in this world, why the fuck would I trust it to save ME from sin in the next?
and for the record, i am not lost or sad or disillusioned about any of this.
recognizing and naming the complete failure of my religion has freed me to explore different (better?) ways of being in the world without needing to shoehorn it into the Bible or the Jesus narrative.

at EF 2019 I was teetering on the edge of Christianity, pretty sure I didn’t believe it anymore. but being there in North Carolina with you all made me want to hang on a little longer, just to keep being part of it all.
I went back for EF 2020 but by the time I left Denver I knew that this wasn’t my space anymore. it didn’t resonate with me. the way you talked about Jesus / Bible / God was familiar, but I couldn’t join you in trying to reclaim that anymore. i was just done.
I'm gonna do a quick thread here about #Exvangelical and #ChristianAltFacts when it comes to male sexuality. Some folks assume that the fundamentalist patriarchy was all fun and games for people with male bodies. This is not the case. Buckle up, kids.
1.) We were constantly pounded (ha!) with the idea that lust is "every man's battle". It is a battle that is almost impossible to win ("If you have unrestricted internet, you're guaranteed to look at porn!"), but if you loved Jesus you would try anyways.
2.) Here's the catch: All sexual desire was labeled as lust. You think a girl is cute? Lust. Intrigued by the pictures on magazine covers? Lust. You imagine having sex with a hypothetical future wife? Lust. God forbid you touch your own penis! Lust, lust, dirty sinful lust!
