The unconventional trick to getting grad. funding in Canada (Social Sciences and Humanities)

If you missed the STEM thread, see it here

This one is meant for those in social sciences and humanities grad. looking to tailor their search, identify profs.
with funding to know their current research focus.
Let's go! (Allons-y✈️)

1)The SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) is a federal research funding agency that promotes and supports postsecondary-based research and training in the humanities&social sciences.
2) Professors (Principal Investigators-P. I) apply individually or collaboratively for SSHRC grants through the submission of project proposals

3) After a committee assesses these proposals, funded projects are made PUBLIC on the SSHRC website.
It’s these funds that professors use to run their research and employ qualified grad. students (YOU) who would deliver the project results as stated in their proposal.

4) Here is the SSHRC website: sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/home-accueil-e…
5) Click competition results>notification of competition results> Winners of recent SSHRC competitions or award recipients Image
6) Click “Award Recipients for Insight Dev. Grants: Feb. 2020 Competition”. The grant results were announced in October 2020. The prof in the image got 74k to carry out research. You can scroll along and play with the filter items at the top of the page using the keywords ImageImage
(school, city, professor’s name if known).

7) Go back 1 page and click “Knowledge Synthesis Grants: Skills and Work in the Digital Economy”. The results for these grants were just announced this month and it was capped at $30k. At the bottom of this page, it shows that ImageImage
it was funded by “Future Skills Centre”. You can click the link to read more about them. I can’t tell if this grant is for hiring students as it depends on the P.I’s plan.

Key points
i) It is very evident that the funding base for social science and humanities can’t match that
of the STEM as seen from my previous thread. See the image below 👇. Nevertheless, don’t be discouraged. Shoot the right shots and improve your profile to make your self competitive. Add technology to your current social science/humanities background. ImageImage
Read this for more insight: mcgill.ca/arts/article/a…

ii) This info. is to help tailor your search, finetune your CV, research experience, and contents of your cold email to containing the keywords the professor is interested in at this moment.
iii) Also, spread your search beyond what you see here. The P.I might still have funds from other sources (just like the one from Future skills centre) and looking to employ grad. students.

iv) Some P.I might have hired graduate students for these positions.
v) Be ready to come up with new initiatives. A P.I might require you to submit a short proposal that would be used to apply for new grants (From the images, you can see the low figures). If they feel it’s good enough, they would be able to employ you.
AVOID the following:

i) Mentioning the funding info. you found on the SSHRC website.

ii) Don’t even attempt to CONGRATULATE them on getting the grant while you have an underlying motive of getting into their lab. They are not entitled to respond even if you are a good fit.

Some clarifications on the WES USA evaluation process

1) WES USA evaluation is different WES Canada evaluation used for immigration

2) For grad. studies in the USA, WES (course-by-course evaluation) is usually employed. wes.org/about-wes-cred…
3) The WES evaluation isn't accepted for all schools in the US. You should do it only if required by the university (see image).

4) Some schools have an internal transcript evaluator. In this case, your unofficial/official HND or Bsc transcript must be provided. For this, Image
it may not be comparable to what is obtained from WES. Some schools would even ask for a "SCHOLARO GPA" equivalent of your transcript when applying. scholaro.com/gpa-calculator/

5) To the best of my knowledge, WES USA evaluated transcript isn't acceptable to any country worldwide

If you’re currently doing your master’s abroad and you wanna move to another part of the world, try to target conferences. You can know this by attending the conferences that hosts the big guys in your field. If you can, present papers in these conferences. Don’t forget to
network in the process. Another approach is to explore existing research collaborations between your current university and the university of interest. Check through your professor’s paper to ascertain such collaborations.
Once identified, ask your professors to help you make the contact. The research community is a big family and student referral trumps any other method. This is why you need to do good work wherever you find yourself. Networking has worked in the past (me inclusive)

An unconventional trick to getting GRADUATE FUNDING in Canada (long thread🙃).

Many applicants have sent countless awesomely written cold emails to professors (principal investigators-PIs) without reply. One of the reasons may be;
(a)Unavailability of grants at that time
b) Mismatch of the applicant's research experience with the current research & funding plans of that PI.

Questions that this thread aims to address are as follows;
a) How do you know if a PI has the funding?
b) If the funding is available, how do you connect your profile and
apply the right terminologies during your communication with such a PI?

Go along with me fellas ✈️

1) The NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) is a national agency that funds innovators and researchers for research that would benefit Canada.

Irrespective of the constraints, writing IELTS/TOEFL to prove your English proficiency allows you to apply to scholarships all over the world and not selected few. If you don’t have this test, you realize that you’ll have to sift through lots of program to find
waivers which is stressful already. There are also positions that you stumble upon when surfing the internet but “sigh” when you see english test requirements. For example, these tests helps you in getting TAship in USA. Furthermore, countries like Canada require IELTS for
NSE fast-track student visa application route. Likewise Ireland requires it for student visa app. If you are really serious about applications, save up and write these tests. They’ll make your life easier.
