On #27Feb2019 0950-1015h 2 x Su30MKI of No15 Sqn @IAF_MCC C/S #Avenger duelled with 8 x F16MLU of CCS/No9 Sqn PAF during #OpSwiftRetort . Evidence shows that PAF launched 4+ AMRAAMs against the Sukhois during this engagement. What is less known is how the MKIs counterattacked 1/n
The North Group of 4 F-16s OCA engaged the Su30 DCA in HOT/COLD Grind, gradually pushing for the LoC. The North Group fired 3 AMRAAAMs against the IAF jets. All missed. The IAF jets pushed bck, also picking up the South Group OCA of 4 x F16s & multiple inbound strike aircraft 2/n
Interestingly a 4th AMRAAM ws fired by the South Group on course of 030-035. This when plotted on the map basis the position of the South Group (SG), clearly puts the IAF aircraft at a distance of 25-30 km from the North Group (NG) PAF jets. Very interesting deductions here 3/n
Its clear from the evidence that IAF’s Avenger 1/2 counterattacked ignoring the high density BVR threat from the F-16s, in all probability breaching the AMRAAM MAR to press home the R27/77 attack 25-30 km from lead PAF jets in the North Group. This hd consequences for the PAF 4/n
Under threat fm the unexpected move of the IAF jets, the lead NG F-16 pair went COLD prematurely even when they cud hve launched agnst Avenger 1 who was HOT. Hassan Siddiqui in SG launched the 4th AMRAAM to target Avenger 1. Though a touch & go, the IAF jet escaped this AAM 5/n
Now let’s focus on probable consequences of this push by Avenger formation. At least 10 outta 12 payloads launched by the PAF fell well outta range of their intended targets. It is exactly for this reason that PAF nvr showed more films of their attks. So what happened there? 6/n
It is highly possible that these payloads were dropped out of their desired envelope. Did these hurried drops by PAF were due to the dash of the Avenger formation towards the LoC? A high degree of probability there when we consider the payload landings between 1000-1005h 7/n
The IAF’s Avenger formation fought back with grit and determination against a much larger PAF F-16 OCA. Inspite of precise timing and numerical superiority of #SwiftRetort, not everything went PAF’s way as fighter pilots fm both sides tested their mettle in the sky that day 8/8
The PAF jets clinically kept themselves safe fm the IAF AAMs and their known engagement envelopes. The dash of the Sukhois was something which may have taken the PAF by surprise, hence the various possibilities as enumerated above. Lessons for both sides from this BVR encounter

We, the 'many', need always appreciate 'the few, the brave':
Their sacrifice ensures that the flag shall always wave!
(Fm the poem 'The Few, The Brave' by Maurice Harris)
On #27Feb2019, while ‘Avenger’ was clashing with the PAF F-16s over Nowshera, 2 x M2000Is of No1 Sqn IAF C/S ‘Ironman’ were battling upto 12 x JF-17s of CCS/No14 Sqn PAF abeam Muzaffrabad in North J&K 1/n
Eqpd with the RDY3 and the Mica combination, the IAF Mirages were the most dangerous adversaries for the PAF that day, with the PAF F-16s over Nowshera vary of engaging the Mirages instead of the Sukhois. This job was given to PAF Thunders who were meant to take on the M2Ks 2/n
The 'only' profile where Chengdu #J20 'Mighty Dragon' will enjoy a measure of #stealth in coming years. Dev & validation of tactics indicates focus on frontal quarter BVR ingress with LR slashing attacks, beaming max 30 deg till A-pole (PL-15), beyond which LO falls dramatically
Buddy & Swarming BVR engagement tactics being developed between groups of J20s to exploit cooperative stealth behaviour for active/passive observation and LR engagement of variety of A-A tgts. A kill box of 200 x 200 km likely to have 4-6 J20s to exploit large NEZ of the PL15
A J20 'wolf-pack' will be supported by wide area intel & full spectrum early warning vide space, air & land based assets as part of a well laid kill chain. J20's tactical use will be best exploited in pre mapped engagement zones as part of PLAAF's 'Large Area' engagement doctrine
The Indian Air Force fought one of its most significant post-independence aerial clash with the Pakistan Air Force on 27 February 2019. This graphic is the most authentic sit rep on the attack axis, force packages and geographical locations of the engagement.
The PAF's North & South Axes were decoys, the Central axis was the main strike thrust - with F-16s using 1000 lbs LGBs, JF-17 the REKs and the Mir III/V the H2/ H4 SOW on 16 Corps targets. The PAF did not cross the LC anywhere.
The JF-17 vs Mirage 2000 engagement took place North of J&K as the JF-17s tried to 'push' the M2000s in a 'Red on Red'. The JF-17's NRIET KLJ-7 PD radar did not do well against the M2000s. The JF-17s main job was to keep the M2000s tied up and not move south.
