Day6 at #SaveTheTree #SaveYorkGardens The 100 year old rare black poplar T68 is due to be felled to make way for an electrical cable. @thameswater @TaylorWimpey @wandbc @UKPowerNetworks Details below. Image
For those of you who want some background blurb. winstanleyyorkroad.co.uk/masterplan
The trees you can see here would be about 30 years in the future, lovely light, lots of trees, people sunning themselves. It is a common visual trick used by developers. 'Artistic licence' Image
The #tree in question is this one, T68. It would be right in the middle of the new open space area. Image
On the original document the Black poplar is listed thus: Image
Here it is again: Image
But things change. Although it was given the highest Grade A status by @wandbc @EnableParks and recommended to be kept, suddenly it was in conflict with the development. Why? Image
Ah, the electric cable! So what happened? read about it here: planning2.wandsworth.gov.uk/iam/IAMCache/5…
Some interesting bits picked out below:
'A total of 1 individual tree, 3 groups of trees and 6 trees from within groups will be removed to facilitate the proposed EHV cable relocation works. There are 3 ‘U’ grade trees that should be removed regardless.'

The individual tree is T68 designated Grade A
Wandsworth tree officers described it thus: It is valued admired and enjoyed by local people and makes a significant contribution to their wellbeing in an area that is surrounded by busy roads and urban infrastructure.
'Many people here regard these trees as ‘ their ‘ trees which should not be treated lightly as our role is to care for these trees on behalf of the residents .

'I do not agree to the proposed removal of T68 . I do not object to the proposed removal of the other trees listed.'
The arboriculturists employed by @TaylorWimpey who said: 'It is my opinion that this tree actually falls between a ‘B’ and a ‘C’ grade'
Poplar trees are characteristically known for having brittle timber.. questionable if this tree has more than 20+ years remaining contribution'
How long do Black Poplars live? 80-100 years? Have a look at these examples.
nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/john…
What does the woodland trust say? woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-an…
Mature trees grow to 30m and can live for 200 years.
Conclusion: Tree T68 is required to be removed for the implementation of the EHV cable and ultimately for the wider regeneration proposals. Officers agree (in line with technical advice) that the tree is a prominent feature in the existing park and a healthy specimen.
So have all routes been explored? Can root damage be avoided by careful digging? I hear it can. Have @EnableParks or independent tree experts been consulted? @GregPackman @TheTreeCouncil
Beyond amenity value and easements: The #ClimateEmergency shows in under 30 years #London temperatures will be 6°'s higher. We owe this to our children to find #climatesolutions or what are we doing?

We know it is difficult, it might mean less profit in the short term, but this is our future like it or not. @wandbc you unanimously declared a #ClimateEmergency @aled_rj @roryobroin you say big business can help solve it, so let's see it in action.
Let's not forget the fine words of @RaviGovindia1
