meng yao's last name 孟 is the same as the meng po's 孟 who makes you drink forgetful soup at naihe bridge & sure, it is bc it's a common last name & possibly the only meng last name, BUT.

no one actually knows meng po's origin, & there are in fact some claims that discuss the possibility of her being 孟姜女/meng jiang nu, whose fiance/husband was drafted to work on the great wall & died & she had so much grief she "collapsed a portion of the wall w her tears"
in the speculation that says she became meng po, she learned how to make the soup to forget her sorrows, & then possibly once she passed, she gave these to the spirits to forget the sorrows of their past life & move on.
i'm not saying the connection is definitive but if the possibility of meng po once being human is there, what of the possibility of her having descendants, of her passing on this knowledge, intentionally or not?

it means he has an out. if he figures out how to brew it correctly, he could make people forget their most horrible memories, particularly the horrible memories they have associated with him, with his CRIMES. HE MAKES NMJ DRINK THE FORGET SOUP.
also tangent as a bit of a mandarin lesson, there are one or two english sources out there that mistranslated & said meng was a name given to eldest, illegitimate children. it ORIGINATED with an eldest illegitimate child, but wasn't for all of them. just in case u go researching
