1 year ago, we would NOT have thought we would be in this place now.
It's a testament to a concerted global commitment to scientific excellence, that we have these available to us now.
It has definitely been a struggle, but we are making tremendous progress.

Benchmark for authorization for a vaccine is ~50% efficacy.
All approved have met that benchmark, in trial settings.
Also the vaccine delays in Canada, allow us to see what has been happening in other places in the world.
We are in a position to learn & educate others...

When we report 62% AZ efficacy vs ~95% for Moderna/Pfizer, it is against symptomatic COVID infection.
But is that really what is most important?
If I get COVID & I will likely get minor symptoms & recover uneventfully, is this useful?
Most of us will have a minor course.

What is most important to me is, can we reduce mortality/morbidity from SEVERE #COVID19
Our vaccination programs are well placed now to prevent that, knowing that AZ adds another layer of protection + confidence.
Real world data informs...

For example: in Scotland, who has now immunized 1/3 of their population.
Data shows AZ Vaccine cut hospital admissions by as much as 94% by the 4th week after first dose, & Pfizer one from Pfizer leading to a reduction up to 85%
In over 80 yo, both vaccines ~81% for this.

W/ respect to variants:
We have good confidence now that both Pfizer & AZ Vaccine are effective against UK Variant, and some lab data suggesting Moderna is effective against South Africa.
Boosters are already being shipped to test in future trials.

So taking this all into account, knowing we are still adapting to variants, have made great success in a VERY fast time, & have to find a balanced approach getting vaccination into people's arms on an unprecedented mass scale.
