Today #Georgia House Republicans are forcing a vote on HB 531, their voter suppression bill based on the Big Lie about the 2020 election.

You can read the bill here:

legis.ga.gov/legislation/59…
It is undeniable: One party is trying to make voting easier & more accessible; the other is following the darkest impulses of our country's history to restrict voting to their advantage.

*Never* say the two parties are the same. I witness every day how different our values are.
Issue #1: Xerox Poll Tax

Rs want to force voters to include a copy of their ID when requesting a mail-in ballot & returning their ballot. We already require an ID # & signature matching. Requiring more is an undue burden & increases the likelihood of identity theft. #gapol
Issue #2: 11-Day Ballot Request Restriction

Rs want to limit mail-in ballot requests to 11 days before the election w/ no exceptions for emergencies or hospitalizations. Gov. Kemp, who quarantined 10 days before the Nov election, wouldn't have been able to vote under this law.
Issue #3: Hiding the Dropboxes

Rs want to hide dropboxes indoors during limited hours, defeating the purpose of their convenience. They're already safe, secure & monitored. Ours is at the Ptree Corners Library. I dropped off my runoff ballot on Xmas Day. No more under this bill.
Issue #4: Criminalizing the Good Samaritan

Rs want to outlaw nonpartisan volunteers from providing food & water to voters who are waiting in line to vote. Other parts of this bill will cause longer lines, & this provision will prohibit community assistance to keep them there.
Issue #5: Shotgun Runoffs

HB 531 would reduce runoff elections from 6 weeks to 4 weeks following the election. 2 million+ Georgians cast their ballots in 2020/21 during the 3 weeks leading up to Jan 5. This bill would reduce that time period to 3-5 days. Just say NO. #gapol
Issue #6: Prohibiting Private Grants, Increasing Taxpayer Burden

Rs want to prohibit county election offices from applying for private grants for improvements. Taxpayers will have to fork up millions of $ in its place. Money is fungible - what's wrong w/ private sector grants?
Issue #7: RIP Mobile Voting Bus

Rep. Jan Jones is advocating against her county's own best interest by killing the mobile voting bus, used primarily by Fulton County. The bus increases access to voting, esp (but not exclusively) in low-income communities. #KeepTheBus #StopTheLie
Issue #8: Handcuff State & Local Election Offices

HB 531 bans blanket mailings of absentee ballot request forms by state & local govts. The govt is in charge of administering elections but isn't allowed to educate voters about their options? Who's scared of this & why?? #gapol

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Ladies and gentlemen, I rise today with sadness that the Devil is at work in these chambers. His mission is to sow fear, lies, and discord among us and to test the bonds of our friendships. (1/10)
Though my God calls upon me to forgive those who would trespass against me, now is the time for men and women of conscience to rise up to reject this awful bill. (2/10)
Proponents of this bill claim to have scientifically identified the point at which our spiritual souls intertwine with our physical bodies, arbitrarily defined as our circulatory system. (3/10)
