-CD4 and CD8 T cells induced by the ancestral reference sequence recognize the four common SARS-CoV2 variants B.1.1.7, B.1.153, P.1. and CAL.20C.
-We think this is really good news. This is true for both COVID survivors and people who received the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.
-No substantial reduction observed regardless of the antigens considered, either S for vaccinees, or full genome for COVID survivors.
-We also show that the vast majority of epitopes recognized by COVID survivors described in sciencedirect.com/science/articl… unchanged in all four variants.
-The data provide some positive news in light of justified concern over the impact of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern on efforts to control and eliminate the present pandemic.
-While it is not anticipated that circulating memory T cells would prevent infection, they could reduce COVID-19 severity.
- Early SARS-CoV-2 T cell responses are associated with milder COVID-19 (Rydyznski Moderbacher et al., 2020; Tan et al., 2021).
-Thus, the T cell response may contribute to limiting COVID-19 severity induced by variants that partially or largely escape neutralizing antibodies.
