The desecration at Juukan Gorge is just another example of what’s happening right now at cultural sites across this country. The system that is supposed to protect our ancient cultural heritage is broken.
This is cultural genocide, and it needs to stop.
Right now, a Parliamentary Committee is investigating the #JuukanGorge disaster and acts of destroying country. This inquiry is ongoing. At yesterday’s hearing, I asked all the witnesses a question.
We have the EPBC Act. We have the Native Title Act. We have the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act. We have state laws. We also have systemic exclusion, and systemic racism.
Q: When it comes to cultural heritage protection, are there any Acts or legislation that actually do anything positive for Aboriginal people in this country?
They all pretty much said the same thing - no, there isn’t.
This is what many blakfullas have been saying for decades.
Our rights, our knowledge, and our sovereignty should be respected.
That’s why we need a Treaty, or Treaties, that acknowledges our First People as Sovereigns in this country.
Treaty is a blank canvas - it should protect and preserve what we have sustained for thousands of years.
