This slide includes data that could be used to argue both for/against giving everyone one dose before giving people a second.
Here's another slide contrasting the arguments for/against giving everyone one dose before anyone gets the second. One major point: The one-dose strategy would violate the FDA's emergency use authorization.
CDC advisory panel yesterday also debated whether people who've had covid need 2 shots or 1. Once again, giving only one shot would violate the FDA's emergency authorization.
Some respected doctors/public health specialists have argued for giving one dose to everyone, and one dose to people who've had covid. A CDC advisory panel balked at both suggestions.
CDC advises against "mixing & matching" vaccines. If someone has a bad reaction with 1st dose of @Pfizer/@modernatx, they can get 2nd dose of @JNJNews.
BUT the JNJ shot is considered a valid single dose, not a mixed dose. That's a very subtle point.
Let's say you want a flu or shingles shot. Can you get them the same day as your covid shot and save time? NO, according to CDC. Separate your covid shot by 2 weeks from other shots, unless it's an emergency (like a tetanus shot b/c of a dog bite).
Can you get a covid vaccine if you've already had covid in the past? Yes, CDC says.
Should you get covid shot if you currently have covid? No. CDC says to wait until infection is over.
Next question. Can you get vaccine if you had convalescent plasma or monoclonal antibodies for covid in the past? There's no data on this, but CDC suggests waiting at least 90 days after therapy.
More covid vaccine questions!
Is vaccine safe for people who are immunocompromised, those with autoimmune disease? What if you've had neurological conditions linked to viral infections, like Guillain-Barre, Bell's palsy?
Yes, yes, yes and yes, says the CDC.
Is it really safe for immunocompromised people (those w/ HIV, cancer) to get a covid vaccine? Yes, says CDC. Immunocompromised people are at greater risk of covid. Vaccine may be less effective for them, but it's safe.
Can pregnant women get the covid vaccine? Yes, says CDC. Covid puts pregnant women at higher risk of severe disease -- for themselves and fetus. 30,000 pregnant women have had vaccine, and doctors have seen no "red flags" about side effects.
Can you get a covid vaccine if you have a peanut allergy? Yes. See the CDC guidelines below. They're really only ruling out covid shots if you've had a serious reaction to the same shot or to ingredients in that shot. Q's? See allergist.
How is CDC monitoring vaccine safety? Check out these slides. A safety group has met 10 TIMES since Dec. 21 to monitor/discuss vaccine safety.
OK, vaccine nerds. Was this belated CDC thread not enough for you?
What? Some of you want to read ALL the slides from this weekend's CDC vaccine advisory committee? Why not? You're not going to bars and restaurants anyway. Go crazy:
I try not to get TOO much screen time before bed, so I'm going to log off and start reading some printouts! Yay. Hope you enjoyed this CDC vaccine advisory recap. Signing off.

@InfectiousPS said she's gotten 80% of her staff vaccinated, with 10% waiting to see how others do. Dr. Tom Shimabakuru is speaking now about safety monitoring. Here's his presentation. #acip cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/…
Live @JeffZients: 13.5 million doses going out this week. On track to have vaccines for 300 million Americans by July. 700 federal personnel to be vaccinators. 1000 members of military will support community vaccination sites.
Live @JeffZients: Covid vaccines will be available at community centers, high school gyms, churches, stadiums, pharmacies.
I'm live tweeting another great interview w/ Dr. Howard Bauchner. He notes that we have 6 months now of vaccine data, since first large study began. No serious safety issues. He said he's reassured.
LIVE: "Here's when to worry" about covid variants eluding vaccines, @drpauloffit says, when people who were vaccinated gets covid again and is hospitalized."
FAUCI LIVE is updating us on therapeutics. Dexamethasone reduces mortality late in the disease. Remdesivir works earlier in the disease, as well as some monoclonal antibodies and convalescent plasma.
FAUCI LIVE: Here are the vaccines in development.
FAUCI LIVE: Covid variants are more infectious and possibly more deadly. B.1.1.7, the UK variant, has a "very slight if at all" vaccine-induced antibodies. "Things get a bit more problematic" for the South African variant.
It's the day you've all been waiting for. An @fdagov advisory committee will evaluate @Pfizer's covid-19 vaccine and recommend whether to issue an emergency authorization. Watch here or follow this tweet thread.
Officially, this is a meeting of the @fdagov's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, or #VRBPAC. They are independent experts, not government employees, who are asked to scrutinize vaccine data and make recommendations. fda.gov/advisory-commi…
Although the @fdagov commissioner listens to the advisory committee, he is not legally required to follow its recommendations. @SteveFDA committed early on to convene this committee to show process wasn't political.
