All newly minted PhDs take NSF's Survey of Earned Doctorates - but NSF still won't track LGBTQ disparities in STEM
@AAAS, @AERA_EdResearch, and I are requesting that White House OMB require NSF to add LGBTQ questions and meet federal equity standards per a Biden executive order
LGBTQ scientists encounter non-supportive STEM environments, and the U.S. may have lost 121,000 LGBTQ people who'd currently be in STEM - besides issues of equal opportunity, that's a massive waste of STEM talent for U.S. scientific progress
3/ LGBTQ people in STEM fields are far more likely than non-LGBTQ people to face career barriers, harassment, and professional devaluation, even when accounting for other demographic and job-related factors bit.ly/3q8BqNF
4/ U.S. STEM census surveys are run by NSF, but NSF still won't include voluntary sexual orientation & gender identity (SOGI) questions. So Congress, funding agencies, universities, & researchers can't understand and address LGBTQ disparities in STEM
5/ We can't even begin to tackle LGBTQ intersectional issues or the STEM pipeline for those multiply marginalized - because while race, ethnicity, disability, and income have long been collected on these surveys, SOGI demographic data are not
6/ Adding SOGI questions to NSF's official surveys is the only way we can track LGBTQ people from U.S. undergraduate and graduate programs through to the STEM workforce in a nationally representative manner, and in a way that can directly inform national and university policies
7/ Lacking the official data we seek, estimates suggest LGBTQ people are 20% less represented than expected, and less likely than non-LGBTQ people to major in STEM, persist in STEM, earn STEM degrees, and be in STEM occupations. Data suggest it's *not* due to a lack of interest
8/ For two years, NSF delayed our request that SOGI questions be added: bit.ly/3q5yAsr. Finally, due to our continued pressure, NSF recently began piloting a gender identity measure, but has omitted sexual orientation entirely: bit.ly/3b9qvyZ
9/ With this Fed. Register response, we're now urging NSF to begin piloting a sexual orientation measure ASAP and continue the gender identity piloting. But ultimately, and unfortunately, NSF likely prefers to put off adding SOGI questions until federal-wide data standards exist
10/ So, we're also urging OMB and NSF to facilitate federal-wide SOGI data standards via the Equitable Data Working Group established by Biden's Executive Order 13985 and co-chaired by the U.S. Chief Statistician and U.S. Chief Technology Officer, who are copied on our letter
11/ Federal-wide SOGI data standards would have enormous implications for LGBTQ equity not only in STEM and higher education, but American society more broadly (e.g., in employment, housing, and immigration) - OMB and NSF can facilitate these data standards being developed
