This a thread about 10 suggestions that are used to defend a massacre. Yes, a lot of it is eerily similar to the language and logic used by the #EthiopiaPrevails sheep to deny #TigrayGenocide and #AxumMassacre
Propaganda 101: How to Defend a Massacre ⬇️
1.
They will argue that the government has "clear objectives" and "surgical operations" that it has "achieved successfully," using bureaucratic language to disguise the brutality of their actions. #TigrayGenocide#AxumMassacre
2. This one is easy. Everything from "diaspora disinformation campaigns" to "junta" to "paid actors" in order to discredit any legitimate critiques. #TigrayGenocide#AxumMassacre
3. The language of dehumanization. Most deniers, by default, assume that Tegaru are lying or hellbent on destroying Ethiopia. They insist there is no room for negotiation because there is no room for reason; the "enemy" is a "cancerous junta." #TigrayGenocide#AxumMassacre
4. Look at how little attention's been given to why TPLF/TDF would conduct the 11/4 pre-emptive attack on a military target. Keyword: military. Why is nobody asking what series of events prompted this? The answer is not just "terrorism" or "junta." #TigrayGenocide#AxumMassacre
6. And they will make a big show about #RebuildTigray and #EthiopiaPrevails because they supposedly care. And the massacres will be minimized. The body counts will be lied about. The brutalities will be denied. The victims will be gaslighted. #TigrayGenocide#AxumMassacre
7. This is the "law and order" argument. The "sovereignty" pushback. The "African solution" facade. #TigrayGenocide#AxumMassacre
8. By this point in the thread, you should able to see right through these. You know this one — it's about red lines being crossed, and hands being forced and patiences running out or some such self-righteous drivel. #TigrayGenocide#AxumMassacre
10. This is the final one. The nail in the coffin. It prevents them from empathizing with someone else's pain/loss. It shields guilty parties from accountability. This is what will guarantee that they will buy it again. And again. And again. #TigrayGenocide#AxumMassacre
These are from @NathanJRobinson's "Propaganda 101: How to Defend a Massacre," a look at the language and logic behind propaganda that justifies/defends massacres and war crimes.
It is a sobering and necessary piece of critical writing that needs more eyes on it. None of the rhetoric that the #EthiopiaPrevails camp is using is new. None of it. In fact, it's predictable.
