This season of #Blackish has been particularly exceptional in tackling very complex race issues. Like not Racism 101 stuff. More nuanced. The way only black people can truly write and think. Like Bow becomes partner at the hospital and starts grooming a black woman protege.
And the young woman is, you're so awesome and GOALs but sorry, it's not for me. I'm gonna work closer to where my mom lives so I can spend time with her instead of chasing this goal.
And Bow introspects about the toll being a pioneer took on her own self and wishes.
Even addressing the aftermath of the George Floyd assassination, the tone was so very "wtf just happened and okay it's good I guess but I'm not your black yoda" perfect.

On marijuana. When Dre freaks out at his 21 yo son smoking weed, it seemed like an "lol it's legal" setup.
Like Anthony Anderson's signature high pitched hilarious freaking out for no reason. Like dude, recreational weed is legal in California for years, so chill about the cops etc.
I learned from the episode that marijuana related detentions and arrests are disproportionately targeting young black men EVEN IN LEGALIZATION states. Now cops are like, let's see if it's above personal consumption limit. 😳😳

And yeah, that's a thing. Look it up.
That it's basically just not the same for a black man in this country to be doing anything even remotely frowned upon without consequences. Including legal weed. And his fears, first shown as comedic dad paranoia, are explained beautifully. With a meta perspective.
Or the episode where ad man Dre makes what he considers an ultra contemporary hip hop pitch and the client (also black) is like "Love it! Sold! Love the over the top retro angle."
And Dre gets worried that what is he if not the guy with the pulse on black youth? Etc.
Blackish is already extremely popular and is a multi spin-off franchise by now. But I still think it's underrated. Starts off feeling like a Fresh Prince tribute but is on a whole other level. And still extremely hilarious. While talking about real things.

So this view from our Lake Placid cabin faces exactly North. Like I am looking at this right now past midnight and I can see Polaris right in front and the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia nicely snuggling it on a clear night sky. And that jogged a Chile memory. So gather around.... Image
I'm gonna post this thread and then unroll it and use it for the sample chapter of my "Imma try BillBrysoning Chile travel" book.

So a huge reason @k_rupal picked Chile as the surprise destination for our 10th anniv trip was how crazy I am about astronomy.
And she booked us a few nights at Alain Maury's SPACE lodge (google him... What a lovely guy!). The first event was a general star gazing session with 25 other people bussed in from San Pedro a few miles away. Alain didn't host that. It was a PhD student.

Just to be clear, yes, this is a legit email from my school's HR. So I guess after @AudreyTruschke, they stayed in Jersey in terms of their online swarm activity. This could be a great research opportunity!

Somehow, I think we in the United States will manage to cope with this devastating revelation.
As the world's foremost lover of the "American Chopsuey" from Indian restaurants (I have it delivered from Curry Hill regularly), here's a short thread on why that sweet tomato-ey thing has a hilarious and also wholesome origin story typifying late 20th century food fusion.
The story starts in late 19th C California where this dish called "chop suey" was created. It literally just means leftovers or scraps. But it became a thing in the American-Chinese scene and the name became universal. But the original chop suey in America is not like in India.

Whoever chose the name Yayati for this made-up crap...🤣🤣🤣🤣....

Either has never read about Yayati. Or has indeed read about Yayati. In either case, 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Image
Yayati's story is that he married Shukracharya's daughter Devayani, whose personal maid Sharmishtha also went with her. Shukra is like, don't you sleep with the hot maid, I warn you. Yayati knocks Sharmishtha up anyway. Shukra curses him to premature old age. But...
... Sharmishtha is like I wanna have babies! So Shukra says, Yayati, if you can con one of your kids into serving out your punishment, you good. So Yayati convinces his son Puru to become prematurely old so daddy can keep doing hotties. In exchange, Puru becomes king. Yay? 🤔

Taking the side of white fascists in any race issue with non desis is a bizarre elite indian trait. Also, bizarrely siding with the British establishment. The inception is strong in those ones. Here's a thread of things I've first heard from desis, usually brahmin males.....
"Brexit was necessary to protect Britain from Islamism"

"Civil War was about states rights. Other countries got rid of slavery without war. Lincoln used it as an excuse to consolidate power" (this one is from libertarians usually)

"Don't you think ALL lives matter?"
Very much this energy they have. Image
