Hello from Minneapolis, and from another building surrounded by fences and barbed wire. The trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd starts with jury selection this Monday.
Scenes from outside the courthouse in Minneapolis ahead of the start of the George Floyd murder trial.
Good morning from downtown #Minneapolis. This is the building where the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin is underway.
Several demonstrations and tributes to George Floyd now happening outside the Hennepin County courthouse.
Barriers, fences, concertina-wire, National Guard.
The Derek Chauvin trial is happening on the 18th floor.
From pool reporter @skarnowski inside the courtroom: Chauvin stood at military-like attention as Judge Cahill entered and called court to order, not facing the judge because his set points off to the side toward the jury box. He wore a black mask and a blue suit.
More from court pool reporter @skarnowski: Bridgett Floyd, George Floyd's sister and founder of the George Floyd Memorial Foundation, is the Floyd family representative in court this morning.
Latest update: jury selection is postponed until at least tomorrow. Clarity being sought from the Court of Appeals on whether a third-degree murder charge can be reinstated, as requested by the prosecution.
A tree outside the courthouse has been decorated with little mirrors calling on people to “reflect”.
The mirrors were put up by this black-clad group called Visual Black Justice.
Masks of Minneapolis.
Outside the courthouse in downtown #Minneapolis, protesters left a trail of fake blood and flowers.
Court in the Derek Chauvin has adjourned until Tuesday at 8 AM. The judge expects jury selection to begin at 9 AM, if the court of appeals does not tell him otherwise.
Exact quote from judge Peter Cahill: “Unless the Court of Appeals tells me otherwise, we’re going to keep going.”

Court is back in session in the Derek Chauvin trial. The former Minneapolis police officer is in the courtroom, wearing a grey suit and a black mask. Jury selection still set to begin at 9 AM CT.
Jury selection could still be delayed if a higher court decision is made on whether a third degree murder charge will be reinstated. For now, things proceed as set out by the district judge yesterday.
Until 9 AM CT motions can be discussed by attorneys, as is the case right now.
Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Asselborn gave the interview in which he calls Trump a pyromaniac was aired the day after the attack on the U.S. Capitol on @RTLlu, in Luxembourgish. I'm listening back to it now, and will fill you in on some more quotes.
Here's some more of what Luxembourg Foreign Minister Asselborn said:
- "Mister Trump is a criminal, a political pyromaniac who should be sent to criminal court. He's a person who was elected democratically but who isn't interested in democracy in the slightest."
More from Luxembourg Foreign Minister Asselborn's interview on 7 January:
- "The 6th of January 2021 was a 9/11 attack on democracy itself, and Trump was the one who egged it on."
Just another day at the White House. Today, Trump will be awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to golfers Annika Sorenstam and Gary Player, as well as Olympic athlete Babe Zaharias. Nothing to see here.
And White House staffers are still happily wandering around the complex, mask-less of course.
Meanwhile, here’s the view from inside the @Potbelly across from the White House.
Good morning from Emerson, Georgia. Like in the rest of the state, Election Day voting in the double Senate runoff election began at 7 AM and goes till 7 PM.
Here is the Georgia sample ballot, this one from Bartow County.
I can confirm that there are indeed a lot of adverts about this election on TV in Georgia.
Greetings from Sanford in central Florida. 31 degrees Celsius. 87 degrees Fahrenheit. Three hours to go until Trump lands here at the airport.
At today’s Trump rally in central Florida, the first after his hospitalization with Covid-19, masks are exceedingly rare and social distancing is nonexistent.
In downtown Sanford, not far from today’s Trump rally: the local Biden campaign office. Closed this Monday, a federal holiday.
