Neoliberals represent an existential threat to even their most ardent defenders for the following 3 key reasons:

1. Neoliberals represent the status quo during times when drastic action is required. They tell everyone everything is impossible and then ensure it is impossible by instituting austerity measures of deficit reduction and tax hikes.

2. Neoliberals allow lesser intellects and wealthy people to feel they have done their Civic duty example preventing Trump and then go back to sleep...

leaving climate crisis for people who have been marginalized by their tactics of status quo, "too left" nonsense spouted from such revered practitioners of right-wing neoliberalism, former Presidents Obama, Bill Clinton and even George W Bush.

3. Once in power they give the illusion of fighting against the very thing they are in essence advancing and the gaslighting technique and propaganda campaigns exceed the life of their administration and have horrific consequences for progressive policies

that now have to take on the latest drum beating that distracts from ever advancing the policies. (See War, benefit cuts, grand bargains, fiscal cliffs, privatization of social security, supreme court nominees, Federal reserve board of governors, etc)

So remember... Neoliberals are not the lesser evil, in many ways, it is better to be out of power, United in fighting against a bad guy or bad policy than to be in power while being guilty of assisting in advancing the very policies and propaganda you claim to revile
