The Universe is made up of six simple and eternal substances called Dravya which are broadly categorized under Jiva (Living Substances) and Ajiva (Non Living Substances) as follows @truejainology 1/6
1. Jīva (Souls) – Jīva exists as a reality, having a separate existence from the body that houses it.
It is characterised by Chetana (consciousness) & Upayoga (knowledge/perception).
Though the soul experiences both birth & death, it is neither really destroyed nor created

2. Pudgala (Matter) – Matter is classified as solid, liquid, gaseous, energy, fine Karmic materials and extra-fine matter i.e. ultimate particles.
Paramāṇu or ultimate particle is the basic building block of all matter. The Paramāṇu/Pudgala are permanent &indestructible.

3. Dharmastikaay or Dharma-dravya (Principle of Motion) 4.Adharmastikaay or Adharma-dravya (Principle of Rest)
These are distinctly peculiar to Jaina system of thought depicting the principle of Motion and Rest. They are said to pervade the entire universe.

5. Ākāśa (Space) – Space is a substance that accommodates the living souls, the matter, the principle of motion, the principle of rest and time. It is all-pervading, infinite and made of infinite space-points.

Kāla (Time) – Kāla is an eternal substance according to Jainism and all activities, changes or modifications can be achieved only through the progress of time.

The Jain cuisine is completely lacto vegetarian and also excludes underground vegetables such as potato/garlic/onion etc, to prevent injuring small insects & microorganisms; & also to prevent the entire plant getting uprooted & killed. It is practised by ascetics & lay Jains

Jains make considerable efforts not to injure plants in everyday life as far as possible. Jains only accept such violence in as much as it is indispensable for human survival, and there are special instructions for preventing unnecessary violence against plants.
