@SenWhitehouse is holding a very important hearing at 3pm EST today.

As Chair of the Subcommittee on the Courts, he will tell us how wealthy interests are influencing our courts through anonymous funding vehicles.

Yesterday, the WSJ Ed. Board wrote a hit piece on him.

/1
For background on this issue, if you have not already watched the presentation that Whitehouse gave during Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearing, now would be a good time to catch up.

This is a must-watch primer on Dark Money in our judicial system.
Yesterday, the WSJ editorial board wrote a nasty column, trying to pre-frame this discussion in terms that are friendly to the interests that Whitehouse is calling out.

They use emotional language and try to claim that he is “threatening” the courts.

wsj.com/articles/sheld…
Only at the very end of the column do they finally reveal the underlying motive behind the hit piece.

This is *all* about the AFPF v Becerra case that SCOTUS has recently taken up.

And it drives at the heart of whether we have the right to know who is influencing our courts.
Short version: one of Charles Koch’s foundations, AFPF, is suing the former CA Attorney General, who forced these groups to regularly disclose their donors.

They now want SCOTUS to rule that our ability to see their funding sources is a violation of *their rights.*
Surely SCOTUS wouldn’t rule that the right to secretly influence our courts, and democracy itself, trumps our right to know who is financing it, right?

Well, that is the point of this hearing today.

In party line votes, SCOTUS always rules in their favor.

That’s a problem.
So, if you can, please tune in, or watch a recording of the hearing later.

And please share it with others.

This is one of the last, largest challenges we face in ensuring that we have a representative democracy.

The public needs to be aware of this and get behind it.

Is this CBS White House correspondent @weijia?

This is the kind of question that would come from OANN.

She’s framing it in Trump/GOP talking points.

Good on @PressSec for exposing the false framing.
Just to be clear, these aren’t ordinary, harmless talking points that @weijia is repeating.

This is part of the GOP’s strategy to sabotage the recovery, harming Americans in the process (almost certainly causing deaths), and then blaming immigrants for people’s suffering.
In other words, @weijia is taking a harmful GOP messaging strategy that is designed to lead to the demonization of immigrants, and packaging it up as if “A lot of Americans are saying” it.

This isn’t something you do on accident. Look at her reaction when Psaki challenged her.

David Brooks hasn’t been honest with his readers.

NYT columnist David Brooks is drawing a second salary for his work on an Aspen Institute project funded by Facebook and other large donors — a fact he has not disclosed in his columns.

The Aspen Institute think tank accepted more than $8 million in federal small-businesses funds despite having a $115 million endowment and a board of trustees populated by billionaires.

David Brooks is doubling down on the dishonesty.

He appeared on PBS Newshour and, rather than own up to his conflicts, he decided to lie about the reporting.

Thread, with video of the interview.

Charles Flynn’s promotion to 4 Star General was sent to the Senate by the White House on Nov 30.

Look at the statute cited.

To me, it appears that Trump reclassified his existing job, so that it would require/trigger his promotion.
Why is this important?

Because it appears that Charles Flynn played a role in preventing the National Guard from responding on Jan 6th.
And consider the timing of his promotion within the context of the rest of the timeline.

Why does this Ian Miles Cheong article that Jack Posobiec is tweeting (and Federalist Benny is retweeting) have a screenshot that was captured in GMT +8?

That’s Irkutsk time, in Russia. Or China Central Time.

Original tweet, on the left, is Pacific time (GMT -8): ImageImageImage

Correction: Benny Johnson is Chief Creative Officer at Turning Point USA, not the Federalist.

Should have double checked that versus relying on my memory; I sometimes get individual groups in the archipelago of right wing organizations confused.

If there is one takeaway from Trump’s CPAC speech, it’s that he owns the GOP.

There is no one else who can do what he does to incite their base, and they know it.

He attacked “RINOs” by name - and he pledged to primary them.

With each new candidate the GOP radicalizes further.
He also strongly reaffirmed the party’s commitment to harsh counter-majoritarian tactics, attacking Dems’ voting integrity bill, HR1, and openly & explicitly embraced voter suppression tactics:

Limit Election Day to “1 day”
Voter ID
Custody chains for ballots
Citizenship tests
Aside from those points, his speech was largely a litany of historical revisionism, claiming credit for the economy and Covid vaccines, claiming “the greatest” accomplishments, and continuing to try to tie Dems to the hyped specter of “communism.”

The Republican Party is an authoritarian power structure.

For decades, it embraced greedy nihilists in order to win elections.

In the last 10+ years, a well-funded insurgency has infiltrated and captured it.

They are now threatening & purging any remaining opposition.
We can’t address the threat they pose to democracy without addressing the methods by which they maintain popular support.

This requires action across multiple fronts.
In terms of public policy, we are working on the right things:

-Bills to eliminate the GOP’s counter-majorian control (voting security, eliminating vote suppression)

-Exposing dark money networks who are funding them (forcing transparency for anonymous shell companies)
