Bogus 'international studies' like this make patently false claims that are downright dangerous, unethical and fraudulent - that India has a vegetarian dietary guideline and also low greenhouse gas emission (as though the 1st is the reason for the 2nd) (1)
firstpost.com/tech/science/i…
Firstly Indian dietary recommendations are not 'vegetarian'.

Inspite of the clear caste prejudice of those making guidelines, they have not been able to deny the importance of animal source foods in the diet.....and this is not for lack of trying (2)
"Animal foods like milk, meat, fish and eggs and plant foods such as pulses and legumes are rich sources of proteins." Dietary Guidelines India (3)
"Animal proteins are of high quality as they provide all the essential amino acids in right proportions, while plant or vegetable proteins are not of the same quality
because of their low content of some of the essential amino acids." Dietary guidelines India (4)
"Include in the diets, foods of animal origin such as milk, eggs and meat, particularly for pregnant and lactating women and children. Good quality protein is derived from milk, fish, meat, poultry and eggs." Dietary guidelines, India (5)
The study authors say nothing about the serious malnutrition crisis in India, particularly of dalit and adivasi communities and this denial is unethical on all fronts (6) newslaundry.com/2020/03/03/adi…
Breastfeeding children age 6-23 months receiving an adequate diet - 11.0%
Non breastfeeding children age 6-23 months receiving an adequate diet - 19.5%
Total children age 6-23 months receiving an adequate diet - 12.8%
National Family Health Survey 2019 data (7)
Children under 5 who are stunted - 35.4%
Children under 5 who are underweight - 32.9%
Women whose body mass index is below normal (<18.%) 17.2%
Men whose body mass index is below normal - 14.3%
NFHS 2019 data (8)
Women who are overweight or obese (>25) - 30.1%
Men who are overweight or obese - 30.9%
Children age 6-59 months who are anemic (<11 g/dl) 65.5%
Non pregnant women age 15-49 years anemic (<12 gm/dl) - 47.8%
NFHS 2019 data (9)
Pregnant women age 15 - 49 years who are anemic (<11 g/dl) - 45.7%
Men age 15-49 years who are anemic (<13 g/dl) - 19.6%
NFHS 2019 data (10)
Have they considered that India may have fewer automobiles and industries which could be the cause for fewer green house gases?? How can they make these random associations. One can even say that malnutrition is a good thing for the climate!!! (11)
Or that high maternal deaths are associated with lower green house gases?
Or maybe the more stunted children the better?
Or maybe higher rates of rape and abuse of women??
Or what about rampant caste based discrimination? Can that be the cause for reduced greenhouse gases? (12)
Meat eaters in India are being killed, harassed, discriminated because of their eating habits. There is enough evidence that the beef is not a global warming villain as projected by vested interests (13)
livemint.com/mint-lounge/fe…
Not only do these kind of bogus studies come out, but our undiscerning media are rushing to publish this nonsense instead of doing due diligence. Its a new form of colonialisation and it kills more people (14)
To top it the people writing this trash have the audacity to say that "these findings highlight the importance of creating dietary guidelines that take sustainability into account like reducing protein foods and dairy products." (15)
@threadreaderapp thread plz
"Indian diets deriving their proteins from cereals and pulse combination (5:1) have a biological value of only 65% relative to egg protein." Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) 2019. Attached table is the assessment of amino acid scores of "Indian" foods
These stats are for one of the so called ‘better developed’ States in India - Karnataka. National collated data hasn’t been released yet
Dr. Sagari Ramdas articles are worth reading. She shows the link between beef bans and dwindling dairy production/increasing costs.
Has the government (and 'vegetarians') thought through this??
Dairy may just get more inaccessible and expensive !
thewire.in/caste/karnatak…
And this stunting and undernutrition data is -2 standard deviation from mean. -1 would shoot up the numbers even more
Obesity and overweight are primarily due to sugar and cereal/millet heavy diets and low animal food consumption

The book "Where India Goes: Abandoned Toilets, Stunted Development and the Costs of Caste" by Diane Coffey and Dean Spears, who work at the Research Institute for Compassionate Economics (RICE) reaches bizarre conclusions and tiptoes around real issues.

tinyurl.com/4jnh6439
"Caste, if probed, will be found, along with gender, as the cause for most of India's problems– sexual violence, landlessness, poor labour laws, poverty, wealth inequality, illiteracy, maternal deaths, child deaths, poor health, open defecation, stunting etc".
"In an attempt to simplify disease transmission and by projecting stunting as a direct consequence of open defecation, the authors resort to means and methods that are problematic and likely, dangerous."

Very comprehensive write up by @ranjanikanth_ and @iffathfathima6z The government needs to get its priorities sorted. Rural Karnataka needs plenty of attention
“Policymaking in healthcare is centralised around big hospitals in cities. Because of this, villagers have to travel to big cities. They spend from their own pocket and if their cases are complicated, their treatment is often left out of free health care government schemes. ”
"We need a three-tier system, starting with a self-sufficient Primary Health Centre and trained doctors in rural areas. Public healthcare system has to be seamless right from the adolescent girl getting pregnant till the baby is five years old."

NFHS 5 !!
•The sex ratio seems to have improved from the NFHS4 data from 979 to 1034.
•Domestic violence by spouse has more than doubled and this is likely to have worsened during lockdown. It is amazing how little the government seems to be bothered about this. (1)
Population living in households that use improved sanitation facility has gone up from 57.8 to 74.8, however, there is a concern about single pits under the Swach bharat scheme and who cleans the pits. Manual scavenging can go up. (2)
Access to internet is pretty poor esp. in rural areas but even in urban areas. With the current shut down of schools, this can give a proxy idea that many children probably do not have access to online education and how shutting down schools is intrinsically discriminatory (3)

For every failure of the government, the multinational market is being pushed as the panacea. This article makes no mention of eggs, dairy or animal foods. Clearly their way to deliver protein will come from a lab! businessworld.in/article/Protei…
Why should rice be fortified by international micronutrient companies when egg and animal food production can be locally strengthened, which are nutritionally superior and gives employment to lakhs of Indians? downtoearth.org.in/news/food/fort…

Kerala lockdown strategy -13 experts - diverse background
"The Committee, however, is cognizant that prolonged and stringent lockdown will lead to economic hardship, famine, law and order issues, which may in turn undermine both the lockdown and the health management objectives".
"The unit for operationalizing such a phased approach is suggested to be a district which has defined boundaries as
well as executive magistrate who have the authority to effectively enforce the measures of the phased lock down".
"Maintaining supply chains of essential goods and services is integral to the achieving both health and economic objectives and central government should ensure to establish effective coordination between
states as well as logistics operators"

IIMB (agrahara that refuses to implement affirmative action) will decide on the 'exit strategy' for Karnataka. Why??
What's their credibility?
What do they understand of lived experience of people in Karnataka?
Look at the Kerala model-Call for a multi-stakeholder consultation.
One of their recommendations

"Till the normalcy is attained, warning signs should be put up in all public toilets to use it when it is absolutely required".

What is the definition of 'absolutely required'??
When your bladder bursts??
Another recommendation

Any place where large number of people use common toilets should be banned.
