We have identified the first confirmed cases of the P.1 variant (the variant first identified in Brazil) in Alberta. These are both travel related and were detected thanks to the aggressive screening processes in place. #COVID19AB (1/5)

Our labs are screening every positive case for variants of concern to help identify them as quickly as possible. In addition, we also do full genetic sequencing on about 400 cases a week. (2/5)

These cases are already isolating. Anyone at risk is being contacted by our dedicated variant contact tracing team and will be offered testing twice. (3/5)

I continue to recommend that all Albertans get the #COVID19AB vaccine when they're eligible. Vaccines save lives.

Starting tomorrow at 8am, we will expand the eligibility for AztraZenca to include anyone born in 1961. You can book w/ AHS online or by calling 811. (1/4)

All First Nations, Métis and Inuit born in 1976 will also be able to book an appointment by calling 811. This is due to a unique constraint in the booking tool.

Health Link is ready and able to book appointments quickly. (2/4)

Starting tomorrow, this means that all Albertans born in 1957, 1958, 1959 1960, & 1961, and all First Nations, Metis & Inuit people born in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, & 1976 are now eligible to receive the Covishield/AstraZeneca vaccine. (3/4)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: We have admin. 317K+ vaccine doses, 91K+ ABs are fully immunized. Over the last 24 hrs, we ID’d 364 new cases & completed about 10.2K tests. There are alerts/outbreaks in 256 schools, w/ 1,017 cases since Jan. 11. (1/8)

Our positivity rate is about 4%. We have ID’d 41 new variant cases, bringing our total to 775. There are 259 people in hospital, incl 38 in ICU. Sadly, 5 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hrs. Every death is a person loved by family & friends. (2/8)

Today is a national day of observance to commemorate those who died due to COVID-19 & remember that we must continue to do all we can to help keep each other safe. My deepest condolences go to everyone who is grieving a loss during this challenging time. (3/8)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: Over the last 24 hrs, we ID’d 399 new cases of COVID-19 & completed about 10.4K tests. Our positivity rate is 3.7%. There are active alerts or outbreaks in 259 schools, or about 11% of the schools in AB w/ 1,017 total cases. (1/9)

We have ID’d 47 new variant cases – 734 total. AB has been able to slow the growth of variants. Active cases w/variants have risen from 3-9% the past 6 wks. Other jurisdictions have risen from 3-4% to over 1/2 of cases. If we work together, we can continue to limit spread. (2/9)

There are 254 ppl in hospital, incl. 37 in ICU. Sadly, 2 new deaths were reported in the last 24hrs. This leaves 2 more families grieving their loved ones. My sympathies go to them, those who are in hosp. or ICU & the families who are watching loved ones battle this virus. (3/9)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB numbers: Over the last 24 hours we have identified 255 new cases & completed 5.4K+ tests. Our positivity rate is 4.6%. (1/4)

There are 263 people in hospital, including 37 in ICU. Sadly, 6 new deaths were reported over the past 24hrs. My condolences go out to the loved ones of these individuals & anyone mourning a loss today. (2/4)

With the easing of restrictions in Step 2, I ask all ABs to continue taking all the necessary steps to protect one another. COVID-19 & its variants will seize any opportunity to spread through our families & our communities. It is up to each of us to not let that happen. (3/4)

I know that some parents may be wondering about school safety and the effectiveness of our current measures against #COVID19AB variants. So far, 32 schools have had a variant case exposure. Of these, only 9 have had any in-school transmission. (1/6)

It’s important to remember that the variants of concern spread the same way as the current dominant strain – by being close to an infectious person. Measures that limit transmission and reduce close contact, among other steps, work on variants too. (2/6)

Since in-person learning began, evidence suggests that schools are not a primary driver of COVID-19 transmission and that measures in place to minimize spread are largely working thanks to the effort and attention of our teachers, staff & students. (3/6)
