Once you have done that, read the student's artist statement <in the following tweets>
"I made my piece WRINKLED because I wanted to make the piece a metaphor for what's happening to the world. My piece started out as a perfect sheet of smooth silver foil. That's the world before the pandemic. I crumpled the foil into a ball. 4/10
That's the world when we went into our houses and didn't really leave. Next, I flattened it out again. That is us becoming more familiar with the situation, and finding out ways to adapt to the situation. It was left all wrinkled and it was ripped, 5/10
and a large part of the corner just fell off while I was flattening it. That's the world recovering from all the bad things that have happened. I also colored some of the wrinkled sections with different colors, purple, red, orange, yellow. 6/10
Those colors represent the vaccines coming out, people being vaccinated In the end, my piece was still the same piece of foil but it wasn't the same. No matter how hard we try we will never be able to fully erase the wrinkles and lines left by me crumpling my foil. 7/10
But the crumpled foil is beautiful even if it isn't the same."

The ideas, process, symbolism, and execution as evidenced in this student's artist statement leave no question that this is quality art work. For me THIS is what quality looks like in art education. 9/10
THREAD: a story. "After I said my standard "centers are now open, start your art" one new 6th grader from Russia came to me and said "I listened to everything you said, but I must have missed something - what are we supposed to do? 1/8
I explained that this was up to her - she could choose a center and begin. I watched as she started a painting. It was as if she had never experienced any of it before - what to do? What to make? How to make it? What next? And now what? Each mark she made delighted her. 2/8
She made a red heart outline (on a GIANT piece of paper) and filled it in with more red (she was delighted with this) then - made a red heart outline and filled it with blue.I wish I video-taped her it was like watching a baby take her first steps. 3/8
