There’s a special relationship between a shark and a pilot fish. On the surface it appears friendly, but it’s better described as “mutualistic,” where each species benefits from the relationship. #velshi
2/11
In this case, the pilot fish gets protection against predators while feeding off fragments of food in the shark’s teeth which, in turn, helps the shark avoid potentially deadly parasites. An unlikely pairing - a Pilot Fish and a shark - but together they work. #velshi
3/11
That seems to be the best analogy for the relationship between Lindsey Graham and Donald Trump. And if it wasn’t already clear - Trump is the shark and Graham is the pilot fish in this scenario. #velshi
4/11
Their relationship has certainly evolved from the early days when Graham once said: “You know how you make America great again? Tell Donald Trump to go to Hell”. But after a few rounds of golf together, feelings changed. #velshi
5/11
Just think, if #Hamilton and Burr had Nine irons, Lin Manuel Miranda wouldn’t have a Tony award today. But how the Trump/Graham buddy cop relationship came to be is less of a question today then *why* it continues. #velshi
6/11
After the insurrection was put-down, Graham spoke on the floor & said this: “Trump & I, we’ve had a hell of a journey. I hate it to end this way … from my POV, he’ s been a consequential president, but today, all I can say is a count me out. Enough is enough.” #velshi
7/11
Indeed, for Graham, enough WAS enough - until it wasn’t. Apparently, it wasn’t enough for Lindsey Graham to vote to impeach Donald Trump & it’s not enough for Lindsey Graham to envision a future for the Republican Party without the former president either. #velshi
8/11
Graham, who recently sat down with Axios had this to say, “There’s something about Trump, there’s a dark side, and there’s some magic there. What I’m trying to do is just harness the magic …” #velshi
9/11
Graham continued, “He could make the Republican Party something that nobody else I know can make it. He can make it bigger. He can make it stronger. He can make it more diverse. And he also could destroy it.” #velshi
10/11
Putting aside the ideas that a man who Graham himself once described as a “race baiting xenophobic religious bigot” could make the GOP “more diverse”, think of the decision Graham just floated: Trump can make the Republican party great or “destroy it.” #velshi
11/11
It is curious to note that while Graham advocates for Trump as the future of the party, Trump is telling the GOP it can’t use his name to raise money anymore. No matter how symbiotic the relationship appears to be, the shark will always do -and eat - what it wants. #velshi

I want to tell you a story about a place far away and its people about whom you probably don’t know much, but who are suffering. #velshi

Xinjiang is China’s largest region by size. It borders Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Russia, Mongolia, and the former majority Muslim states of the Soviet Union. #velshi
3/13
Of the 25 million people who live in Xinjiang, about 11 million are Turkic, as opposed to the Han Chinese who are the overwhelming majority in China. They are known as Uighurs. #velshi
1/9 "The events in Birmingham & elsewhere have so increased the cries for equality that no city or state or legislative body can prudently choose to ignore them. It is a time to act, in Congress, in State & local legislative bodies & above all, in all of our daily lives" #velshi
2/9 That was President Kennedy in a speech to the American people on June 11, 1963. It was considered a watershed moment in the Civil Rights movement and marked the beginning of the end of a long struggle for equal rights. #velshi
3/9 Protesters began to pressure Birmingham’s business leaders to open employment to people of all races, and end segregation in public institutions, stores, schools, and restaurants. #velshi

On Thursday the Biden administration, along with congressional Democrats, unveiled a new immigration bill creating a path of 8 years to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants already in the country. #velshi
2/11
The bill also provides an expedited path for DREAMERS - the undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children by their parents. #velshi
3/11
The bill’s approval has a tough road ahead given razor thin Democratic majorities in both houses, but while there’s little bipartisan support for immigration reform in Washington, DC, there’s broad support for what it aims to do among Americans. #velshi

A couple is two people, a minyan is ten, a jury is twelve - so what do you call eleven people? #velshi

Well in the case of the 11 House Republicans who joined the 219 democrats in voting to remove Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committees assignments, you call it a good start … but with a very big caveat. #velshi
3/13
The House of Representatives resolution punishing Greene was barely more than a page long. House rules require Members of Congress to “reflect credibly” on the chamber, and pointed to Greene being removed for quote “conduct she has exhibited.” #velshi

This week, the Senate will hear arguments about why the former seditionist President of the United States should be convicted of Inciting an Insurrection. Democrats will argue that the former commander in chief convinced an army of his followers to storm the Capitol. #velshi

Democrats will argue that the events of 1/6 damaged our Democracy.
But democracy was not the only victim of the insurrection. There is a yet greater and more personal toll for those who were inside the Capitol and those who were defending it. #velshi

Officer Sicknick (left) sacrificed his life. Officer Goodman (right) risked his life to save Members of Congress. These are names we’ve come to know & praise, but there are other heroes who woke up on 1/6 as one version of themselves & went to sleep forever changed. #velshi
