CONVERSATION!

Him: I really wanna study abroad with a scholarship in Data science/Software engineering based on my 3 years of relevant work experience. Although, I have a Bsc in an Animal science with a 4 pointer CGPA. How can I go about this.

Me: Very possible if you are not
looking for scholarships. But no serious admissions/scholarship committee would commit such funds on you seeing that academic background mismatch at the expense of others with relevant background. They would wanna see Data structures, Algorithms & Statistics in your transcript.
Him: So what do you suggest?

Me: You can apply to programs with a good fit for your background. You can audit computer related courses while doing your MSc. In fact, you can apply “Machine learning to model Animal diseases data” in your thesis. Hell yeah, you can even
develop an app. if you want.

Him: Cool. What about job prospects? Can I still get a job in software engineering?

Me: Of course. I know a colleague who did an Erasmus Forestry program but currently working as an IT professional in Belgium. He did his Msc thesis in same
fashion just as I’ve described above and got snapped up by an IT- start up. Companies care about what you can offer right now. If you got the skills with proof, you’ll do just fine.

Him: Good point. Thanks for the tips. I’ll re-strategize.

THE WAITING LIST

You might have been informed that you are currently waitlisted for a program but have no idea where you stand. People have been chosen “out of the blue” from the waiting list while others knew it was only a “matter of time”.
I believe you deserve to know your current ranking on that list (if there’s any). This can be done by writing an email to the graduate/admissions coordinator.

How can you do this?

1) Start with the proper salutation and introduce yourself (include your application no.)
2) Remind the recipient that you’ve been informed of your waitlist status.

3) Ask if you could know your current standing or how “high up” you stand on the waitlist.

4) Include a proper closing with an anticipation for a response.

Your message may be acknowledged or not.

Some clarifications on the WES USA evaluation process

1) WES USA evaluation is different WES Canada evaluation used for immigration

2) For grad. studies in the USA, WES (course-by-course evaluation) is usually employed. wes.org/about-wes-cred…
3) The WES evaluation isn't accepted for all schools in the US. You should do it only if required by the university (see image).

4) Some schools have an internal transcript evaluator. In this case, your unofficial/official HND or Bsc transcript must be provided. For this,
it may not be comparable to what is obtained from WES. Some schools would even ask for a "SCHOLARO GPA" equivalent of your transcript when applying. scholaro.com/gpa-calculator/

5) To the best of my knowledge, WES USA evaluated transcript isn't acceptable to any country worldwide

If you’re currently doing your master’s abroad and you wanna move to another part of the world, try to target conferences. You can know this by attending the conferences that hosts the big guys in your field. If you can, present papers in these conferences. Don’t forget to
network in the process. Another approach is to explore existing research collaborations between your current university and the university of interest. Check through your professor’s paper to ascertain such collaborations.
Once identified, ask your professors to help you make the contact. The research community is a big family and student referral trumps any other method. This is why you need to do good work wherever you find yourself. Networking has worked in the past (me inclusive)

An unconventional trick to getting GRADUATE FUNDING in Canada (long thread🙃).

Many applicants have sent countless awesomely written cold emails to professors (principal investigators-PIs) without reply. One of the reasons may be;
(a)Unavailability of grants at that time
b) Mismatch of the applicant's research experience with the current research & funding plans of that PI.

Questions that this thread aims to address are as follows;
a) How do you know if a PI has the funding?
b) If the funding is available, how do you connect your profile and
apply the right terminologies during your communication with such a PI?

Go along with me fellas ✈️

1) The NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) is a national agency that funds innovators and researchers for research that would benefit Canada.
