“Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” John 20
“To some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know....To others it is given to believe, that they also might have eternal life” DC46.
It’s human to value concrete knowledge over faith or belief (we’re concrete beings living in a physical world, after all.) But God values your belief above your knowledge. How much nobler to trust him for what you can’t see nor touch. How humble & submissive to his will.
One who believes but has yet to obtain the fulness of knowledge he desires may find himself feeling inadequate in his testimony. (What a grave lie satan plants in a heart’s fertile soil!) God hears not résumés but prayers. He counts not what we witness but what we do.
There are many who were present when Christ dwelt among men on earth. With their eyes, ears, hands, & hearts they knew him, & yet turned away. Their knowledge profited them nothing in the end.
Those to whom God grants eternity are the believers who, knowing all, part, or nothing for certain, dedicated their love & lives to obeying his commandments & joyfully doing his will. In the grand scheme, faith is why we’re here—to see if we’ll *do* God’s will, not merely know.
The great miracle is that the path of believing & doing is a high road that almost inevitably leads to seeing all from above, seeing the whole picture & the way things fit, that sudden remembering of pre-mortal truths that we call conversion—that which we call “knowing.”
We don’t all find it the same way or at the same time. Some retrieve divine knowledge as youth. Some are faithful to the end & only remember at the moment they’re received into paradise (how blessed are these most faithful saints!) But most of us who seek will find in this world.
Do NOT be reductive of your testimony if it’s grounded in belief though your knowledge is not yet perfect. Some w/perfect knowledge still fall. But “faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.” Alma32
Rejoice in your testimony of faith. Share all you believe & that which you also know. Have peace. As you plant your feet upon the Rock of the Redeemer & anxiously engage in his work, he will gently reveal himself before you. Then “your knowledge is perfect in that thing.” Alma32
“Woe unto you, scribes & Pharisees, hypocrites!” (Matt23) Now as then, we live in an impossibly complex social system set up to virtue-signal & cancel people. No one is left out—there are rules that reach anyone. Why? Bc scared people don’t speak. They are easily led. #HearHim
How did Christ handle it? He spoke the truth anyway. He valued eternal law over personal comfort. He rebuked the oppressors & defended the weak. He abandoned all thought of reputation, even until they took his life. Will we exhibit the smallest part of his courage to follow him?
This life is made to cancel us. If you haven’t been cancelled by the world yet, now is a good time try harder. If you find yourself at ease with society, examine your priorities. What can you do today to remind God you’re on his side, & remind the devil you’re not his friend?
“Your spirit is an eternal entity. Your Heavenly Father has known you for a very long time. You, as His son or daughter, were chosen by Him to come to earth at this precise time, to be a leader in His great work on earth.” #RussellMNelson
He has known you for a very long time, and you have known *him* for a very long time. He hasn’t forgotten you; he watches every moment & assists even when you don’t notice. You, on the other hand, had to forget. That’s the test. To win is to remember, embrace, & endure. #HearHim
This is the entire individual work of a mortal human being: to remember him. It’s in you, waiting to be discovered. We who have already remembered are under covenant to help others remember, because he loves them as infinitely as he loves each of us.
“The world in which we now live is moving rapidly away from the teachings of Christ in its laws & customs. As a result, Satan is working overtime to confuse God’s sons & daughters & to divert the very elect from fulfilling their duty & receiving the Lord’s blessings.” #Ballard
“Satan wants you to stop practicing good habits such as daily scripture study, praying daily, worthily partaking of the sacrament weekly, and giving genuine, heartfelt service. He also wants you to stand on the sidelines in today’s important and crucial battles.” #MRussellBallard
“Remember, we are at war—but not a war of guns and bullets. Nevertheless, the war is real, with countless human casualties. The war is in fact a continuation of the one that began in the premortal world.” #MRusselBallard 2015
“Above all, do not lie to yourself. A man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point where he does not discern any truth either in himself or anywhere around him, and thus falls into disrespect towards himself and others...” #Dostoyevsky
“Not respecting anyone, he ceases to love, and having no love, he gives himself up to passions and coarse pleasures in order to occupy and amuse himself, and in his vices reaches complete bestiality, and it all comes from lying continually to others and himself.” #Dostoyevsky
Why is self-deception a prominent feature in self-destruction? Because moral absolutes exist & are inborn to each person on earth—“It is given unto them to know good from evil; wherefore they are agents unto themselves” (Moses 6:56). We know. To excuse sin, we must lie.
1. Practice. Commit to morning and night, on your knees by your bed. Even if it feels futile, make that your unwavering commitment and keep on talking, keep on talking, keep on talking.
2. Just talk. I’m a writer. When someone says “I don’t know what to put on the paper,” I tell them “What’s the conversation going on in your head? Write it down. If you don’t know what to say, say ‘I don’t know what to say.’ Don’t worry if it’s clumsy. It’ll come to you in time.
Noah, The Brother of Jared, & Nephi were prophets from different eras. God told them to to build vessels for a perilous journey. The blueprints were of curious workmanship unknown to man. But their boats were not the same. Their journeys & their purposes were not identical.
The Lord knew their respective needs, & he knew that the instructions they needed did not yet exist on earth. They endured doubt & scorn from others, yet they obeyed exactly. They had ears to hear the Lord & arms prepared to do the work.
We too need specific instructions not fully available on earth. We have a prophet who listens, obeys, & instructs. We have ordinances, Priesthood, tools, & a mandate to call upon God for personal revelation. The Church is a ship of curious workmanship. Our personal ships are too.
