Firstly, it's not good to muddle solo news conferences and joint pressers with foreign leaders. They're very different — including in the amount of questions and how they're asked. I have basically written a whole article on this point. yahoo.com/news/president…
And as you can see in my article, after his initial solo press conference, Trump proceeded to avoid press conferences for a record stretch. That's not even mentioned in this WaPo piece, which is a pretty glaring omission.
It's particularly silly to conflate joint pressers with foreign leaders and solo press conferences in this pandemic moment when foreign heads of state have not visited the White House.
One thing Trump started was doing more informal q and a's with reporters than predecessors. Biden kept that up and, by the start of this month, he did 40 of those. It's not mentioned in this piece at all even though I know the very experts cited here are careful to point that out
Here's great deeply contextualized data on this from the inimitable @mkumar38 who knows this space better than anyone. As you can see, it's far more nuanced than the picture provided in this WaPo piece.
Solo press conferences have unique value for the public. Biden should do more of them and deserves some criticism for this. However, people on the political media and White House beats have no excuse for not knowing this context or including it in pieces on this.
Also, @mkumar38 has *quite literally* written the book on the White House press shop and presidential communications. Any reporters interested in this should reach out to her. She is an absolutely vital and unparalleled resource.
I should note the image above with the totals of various oress engagements was current as of March 4. Sorry for not citing that in the initial tweet!

Democrats I spoke to are concerned McConnell wants to limit a 1/6 commission to a review of security failures because he's "concerned with shielding his members" from scrutiny about their conduct that day. yahoo.com/news/matt-gaet…
There have been some links between GOP House members and 1/6 organizers. "Stop The Steal" rally leader Ali Alexander claimed Mo Brooks, Andy Biggs, and Paul Gosar helped him plan events that day. I got this statement from Brooks' office when I asked about that.
Ali Alexander's January 6 "Wild Protest" site listed multiple GOP House members as invited speakers including Gosar. Then this week, Gosar's chief of staff @VanFlein was hanging with Ali - who's reportedly in hiding - on Clubhouse. They didn't respond to my questions about this
Here's one of my clips. This guy tried to get people to go to CNN and MSNBC's offices. "Listen up ... FYI Kayleigh McEnany just tweeted at the discretion of Trump. The National Guard will be coming to clear us ... We need to go take down MSNBC, CNN ... they started the fire"
Here's another one of my clips. At the end you can see a guy grab a bullhorn and announcing "Donald Trump has just tweeted please stay peaceful." At least some in the crowd were clearly taking cues from the president and, as we know, his first message was "fight like hell."
I see a lot of people bashing Zeke's question but the president's decision to travel absolutely leads to more exposure for people traveling with him and in Delaware.
I was born in 1984. My moms are gay and so was so much of our community as I grew up. There were five people I was particularly close with as a little kid that died from AIDS.
It was such a strange crisis – and so weird to experience as a child. People just disappeared. There was so much stigma. Two of my parents' friends didn't want them to tell me they were sick. They went away to die in private. I didn't find out what happened until I was older.
There is a debate going on here about whether people who were at the Capitol complex had a right to be scared on January 6. I was there.
I would like to think I have seen some things in my day. I have been present for violent protests, shootings, violent protests, a fatal accident, and a terrorist attack. January 6 was one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed.
I keep flashing back to the first moment I realized people were inside the dome. There was no data reception. I hadn't seen it online. I called my editors to let them know.
NYCs colors are actually prretty important to the city. The borough of Brooklyn could really use a new flag though. Have been hoping to see @ericadamsfornyc do something about this for a long time.
This is actually the flag of Brooklyn, one of the world's most vibrant and diverse places. The woman is holding a fasces, which later became the symbol of Mussolini's fascist party. Such a shame in a place so known for art and culture.
